LIVERMORE FALLS — It doesn’t matter if it’s through the air or on the ground, Spruce Mountain quarterback Dylan Jewett always seems to find the end zone.

Jewett was responsible for four touchdowns Friday night (one passing, three rushing) as he led the Phoenix to a 40-28 win over Cape Elizabeth in an eight-man football Large School South clash.

“That kid, he can change the game in the blink of an eye, and sometimes we have to talk to him a little bit to realize that,” said Spruce Mountain coach Devin Roberts. “And once he knows it in the game, he does it.”

In Spruce Mountain’s 36-34 loss to Orono on Oct. 2, Jewett was also responsible for four touchdowns, rushing for one, throwing for two and returning a kick for a score.

“I think a lot of it goes to the line and coach just making the right play call, and my guys just block for me, so (I) just take advantage of that,” Jewett said.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Spruce Mountain (4-2) took the lead on its first offensive play, a 56-yard run by Jewett. Cape Elizabeth (4-2) answered with a 13-yard touchdown run by quarterback Rosco Hampton.

The Phoenix and Capers went back-to-back again on their ensuing drives, which resulted in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Jewett to Levi Richards, and a 2-yard touchdown pass from Hampton to Liam Brown.

Jewett’s 72-yard touchdown run with just under two minutes to go in the second quarter gave Spruce Mountain a 20-14 lead. Cape Elizabeth answered again in the third quarter, scoring two touchdowns (a 6-yard run from Hampton and a 9-yard pass from Hampton to Sam Hews) to take a 28-20 lead with just under 17 and a half minutes left in the game.

The Phoenix scored the next three touchdowns to take control. After Spruce Mountain tied the game, the Capers had a chance to regain the lead, but their drive stalled at the Spruce Mountain 9 when Levi Richards recovered a fumble by Hews. Jewett and Owen Kelvey scored for Spruce Mountain to put the game away.

UNSUNG HERO

Not only did Spruce Mountain’s Levi Richards catch a touchdown pass and a 2-point conversion, but the wide receiver/cornerback also recovered the fumble that shifted the game in the second half. His defensive effort led to the touchdown that gave the Phoenix a 34-28 lead in the fourth quarter.

HEARD IT HERE FIRST

• “We came into the game knowing we had to win if we wanted to seal a spot, (a top-four spot) for playoffs, so it was a big game for us.” — Dylan Jewett

• “We feel like we’ve beaten the teams we’re supposed to beat, and the two teams (Yarmouth, Spruce Mountain) that we really had circled on our schedule, we just have to play a full four quarters. In both of those games, we’ve had some turnovers in areas of the field where we were going to take the lead or increase the lead, and it just didn’t work out that way.” — Cape Elizabeth coach Issiah Bachelder

STATISTICAL LEADERS

• Spruce Mountain: Dylan Jewett (three rushing touchdowns; one passing touchdown), Owen Kelvey (two rushing touchdowns)

• Cape Elizabeth: Rosco Hampton (two rushing touchdowns, two passing touchdowns)
