FARMINGTON — Fryeburg Academy quarterback Marcus Sutton and his brother, Darryl, acknowledge they have a special connection. It helped the Raiders earn a key victory on Friday night.
Marcus threw two touchdown passes to Darryl, and Fryeburg held on for a 14-13 victory in a Class B North game when Mt. Blue failed on a 2-point conversion attempt with 1:45 left.
“I just trust (Darryl),” said Marcus. “I just put all my faith into him and he’s down there somewhere.”
Added Darryl: “He’s my brother, we got great chemistry. We’ve been playing sports with each other for a long time, so I’m not surprised, and just can’t wait for the rest of the season.”
HOW IT HAPPENEDThe Cougars (2-5) made a defensive stop early when Jakob Corey recovered a Fryeburg fumble. Karter Meader also recovered a fumble on the Raiders’ third drive.
Mt. Blue took the lead with just over five minutes left in the second quarter. A long punt return by Cannon Smith and a couple penalties against Fryeburg (3-4) set up a 5-yard touchdown run by Dillon Gray.
The Sutton brothers connected with just over two minutes left in the first half, but the extra point was blocked.
In the third quarter, Darryl Sutton caught a 24-yard TD pass, and Conner Keaten caught a 2-point conversion pass to give the Raiders the lead.
Gray scored on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter, but the Cougars threw an incomplete pass on the conversion attempt.
Mt. Blue forced Fryeburg to punt, and when the snap went awry, the Cougars had the ball at the Fryeburg 7 with 28 seconds to play, but they were out of timeouts and were unable to score.
UNSUNG HEROBuk Awe’s rushing was paramount in Fryeburg’s second touchdown drive. He carried the ball seven straight times to start the possession. Two plays later, Darryl Sutton caught his second touchdown pass.
HEARD IT HERE FIRST• “I think we both tried to give it away. Their team battled, we battled. We both, I think, (have) been struggling in the same (areas) throughout the year, finding ways to lose games, both us and Mt. Blue, and we just were the ones that were lucky enough to win tonight. It wasn’t anything special … we made enough mistakes to lose, but fortunately, we came out with a win.” — Fryeburg coach David Turner
• “What you see is our season. That’s our season. We’ve been in every game besides one, and we just, right now, can’t find the right one … (Fryeburg) played hard. Neither team deserved to lose tonight. I’m sad for my seniors, because they’ve given me everything I ask.” — Mt. Blue coach Craig Collins
STATISTICAL LEADERS• Fryeburg: Marcus Sutton (4 of 9 passing, 75 yards, two touchdowns), Darryl Sutton (two receptions, 53 yards, two touchdowns)
• Mt. Blue: Dillon Gray (two rushing touchdowns)
