Scots quarterback Lucas Klehn leads an offense that gains nearly 500 yards.

STANDISH — Bonny Eagle’s football team excelled in all facets Friday night and continued to be led by the brilliance of senior quarterback Lucas Klehn.
Klehn ran for 170 yards and four scores and threw a 67-yard touchdown pass as the unbeaten Scots rolled up 497 yards in a convincing 45-6 Class A win against previously unbeaten Oxford Hills.
“There are a lot of good players in the state of Maine, but I find it hard to believe that any of them are playing better than Lucas Klehn. He’s been unbelievable for us,” said Bonny Eagle coach Kevin Cooper.
Oxford Hills (4-1) had allowed only 27 points in its four wins. The Vikings will look to bounce back next Friday at home against Portland — the other top team in Class A North.
“It’s good for these guys to have some adversity,” said Oxford Hills coach Nate Danforth. “The first time this year we’ve had any adversity, really. We just have to get home, figure things out, and get back to work Monday.”
Bonny Eagle, ranked second in the Varsity Maine poll, is 6-0 thanks to Klehn and strong play in all three phases. The Scots play at home next week against Exeter, New Hampshire, then face arch-rival and also unbeaten Thornton Academy in Saco on Oct. 24.
OFFENSEKlehn set the tone when he tore through the middle of the Oxford Hills defense, making people miss and running through tackles for a 61-yard touchdown. On Bonny Eagle’s next possession, Ben Noe got things rolling with a 30-yard burst, and the Scots unveiled for the first time this season an extremely fast-paced tempo. The seven-play, 81-yard drive took less than two minutes without any clock stoppages. Klehn finished it with a 20-yard run.
“It adds a whole new facet to our offense,” Klehn said. “We looked at their five guys up front and thought our five guys up front were more conditioned. And that turned out to be true and we wore them down real fast.”
Bonny Eagle made it 21-0 in one play, when Klehn threw deep to Drew Gervais. The New England 100-meter track champion in the spring, Gervais saw the ball descending and appeared to give his legs just a bit of extra gas, collecting the ball in stride and easily running to the end zone for a 67-yard score.
The Scots used the supercharged attack once more in the second quarter, going 56 yards in eight plays that took just over two minutes, with Klehn scoring his third TD on a 5-yard run.
Klehn’s fourth touchdown was from 11 yards and capped the scoring.
DEFENSEOxford Hills had averaged nearly 35 points in its four wins. The Vikings were without top back Keegan Ridley (nursing an injury), but his brother, Mason, and quarterback Toby Oufiero did combine for 160 rushing yards and the offensive line got a good push quite often. But Oufiero’s 11-yard run in the second quarter that cut the lead to 21-6 was the only touchdown for the Vikings.
“Overall, there’s a lot of good things we can take from our defense today. They have a lot of good offensive players,” Cooper said.
In the second half, Oxford Hills had drives that reached the Scots 9 and 20. Both were stymied by pass breakups from defensive backs Marcus Katane, Noe and Wes Pinkham.
“It’s all about trust. Trust your teammates and then go and get the job done,” Noe said.
SPECIAL TEAMSBonny Eagle’s Ben Havu was 6 for 6 on point-after kicks and made the team’s first field goal of the season, a 21-yarder for a 24-6 lead.
His biggest play was as a punter. On fourth-and-17 from his own 15, Havu rolled a bit to his right in the rugby-style approach and then took off. He made a nice move behind blocking to get the first down, ran along his team’s sideline for another 15 or so yards, then avoided a defender and sprinted the rest of the way for an 85-yard score.
STATISTICSOxford Hills: Toby Oufiero (7 of 17 passing, 59 yards; 17 carries, 100 yards, 1 TD), Mason Ridley (15 carries, 60 yards), Kamden Record (3 catches, 23 yards)
Bonny Eagle: Lucas Klehn (10 carries, 170 yards, 4 TDs; 4 of 5 passing, 91 yards, 1 TD), Ben Noe (12 carries, 137 yards), Ben Havu (5 carries, 97 yards)
