Midsummer Scream: We don’t make the ghouls, er, rules, but Halloween truly starts in Southern California in August. That’s when “the world’s largest Halloween and horror convention” arrives at the Long Beach Convention Center, along with star-filled panels, attraction announcements, theme park peeks, and hundreds of vendors selling everything from ghostly gowns to vampire make-up. Oh yes: The haunting Hall of Shadows will add eerie oomph to the Aug. 7-9 extravaganza, if you want a maze-y and monster-y experience.
Aqualillies Summer Watershow: One of the splashiest, wow-iest, take-the-plunge-iest dates on the warm-weather calendar is the popular synchronized swimming event, which honors the day Esther Williams, the swimming movie icon, was born. The 2026 party lands at Golden Hour rooftop pool at Level 8 in DTLA on Aug. 9, and tickets are available for purchase. This is the “only annual public performance” by the celebrated group, and if you’re hoping to attend an advance ticket is a must.
“The Sandlot” at Dodger Stadium: Naming your top ten list of perfect baseball movies? So easy, but not quite as simple? Watching a batter-up classic while lounging in the outfield of an actual baseball stadium. Fans of “The Sandlot” will head to Uniqlo Field at Dodger Stadium Aug. 8 to enjoy the classic flick. Look to the DodgerVision videoboards (that’s where the film will screen), but do arrive early for a variety of activities, including tours, bullpen fun, and more. Ticket info is on the site, yep.
RiverFest: The Los Angeles River is so storied, so long — it wends for dozens of miles, touching several communities — and has garnered a devoted fandom. Many of those fans volunteer for Friends of the Los Angeles River (FoLAR), and the chance to gather with all river supporters is a sweet one. Flow in the direction of LA State Historic Park on the afternoon of Aug. 9 for a free celebration full of music, food trucks, community booths, and other nature-strong sites; entry is complimentary but do RSVP.
Runway Fashion Show: Upcycling has been the stylish rage for, well, ever. People have long found fresh ways to repurpose interesting items, with necklaces, accessories, buttons, and other wearable ornaments adding flair to a look. The Festival of Arts honors this creativity each August by spotlight several offbeat, upcycle-themed outfits and the chance-taking, big-swing-loving designers who created them. Arrive at the Aug. 9 event with clothing to donate to Working Wardrobes and your festival admission is free.
