VASSALBORO — Maranacook senior Jack Fontaine has come through in plenty of big moments on the basketball court.
Saturday, he came through on the golf course.
Fontaine shot a 1-over 73 to take the Class C individual boys title and help the Black Bears win the team title on the Arrowhead course at Natanis Golf Course.
“It feels amazing. I did not expect this,” said Fontaine. “It’s just a hobby, really. I just play for fun.”
Maranacook finished with a score of 317 to beat Winthrop by one shot. It’ i’s the third state title for the Black Bears, who also won in 2022 and 2024. Calais (328), Dexter (332) and Houlton (336) rounded out the top five.
“This year was definitely different,” said Maranacook coach Ryan Meserve. “We didn’t play as well as we wanted to all throughout the (regular) season. We knew that if we could just get through one (good) day, we’ve got guys who have won state championships before … The team is super resilient, like each other as a team. We knew we needed just one good day.”
Winthrop’s Kaydence Allarie shot 83 to win the Class C girls title. Mattanawcook Academy’s Skylar Bard was second with a 90.
“It feels really good,” said Allarie, a junior. “I definitely knew that I could do it. I just needed to stay consistent and play my game.”
In addition to Fontaine’s round, Grady Hreben shot 79, Josh Herzing carded an 80 and Sam Dunton had an 85 for Maranacook.
Drew Mertzel, who won medalist honors last year, led Winthrop with a 76. Also for the Ramblers, Sam Corgan shot 79 and Lincoln MacArthur finished with an 80.
Fontaine has only played competitive golf for three years and wasn’t thinking about winning the title entering play Saturday. He had birdies on the fourth, 12th and 13th holes.
“Today is just (the mindset) of you versus you,” Fontaine said. “You’re competing against yourself.”
Ryan Farnsworth of Dexter was the boys runner-up with a 74. Mertzel, Beckett Peabody of Houlton and Chris Johnson of Kents Hill tied for third at 76.
Allaire said she struggled on the back nine, but her putting helped her out.
“The whole front nine, I felt pretty good about my game,” Allarie said. “I think that definitely helped, because I got my numbers a little lower.”
