AUGUSTA — William Morris of Dirigo and Reagan Mattson of Maranacook dominated their competition Saturday while winning individual titles in the Mountain Valley Conference cross country championships at University of Maine at Augusta’s Elvin Fields.

Winthrop cruised to the boys team championship with 30 points, far ahead of Maranacook (72) and Boothbay/Wiscasset (93). Mattson helped Maranacook (51 points) edged Boothbay/Wiscasset (59) for the girls team title.

Morris, a senior, finished the 5-kilometer course with a time of 16:20.26, more than 35 seconds quicker than Winthrop’s Alfie Cognata (16:55.68) and Sawyer Wess (16:56.00).

“It’s not a very fast course, I wasn’t going for any (personal records),” Morris said. “Maybe it’s a lack of confidence or something, but I’m always scared I’m going to get passed. My coach has always drilled into me to never look back, but I just never seem to lose that fear, and push (as if) someone is going to pass me.”

Morris, who swept the MVC, Class C South and Class C state titles last season, has had another successful fall. He was runner-up to Scarborough’s Atticus Merriam by 0.15 seconds at the Festival of Champions in Belfast on Oct. 3.

“I’m feeling pretty good about states and regionals,” Morris said. “I feel like MVC is the strongest Class C conference. If you can place well here, you can place well at states.”

Mattson, a freshman, finished in 20:06.23, more than 1:15 faster than runner-up Kylie Van Tassel of Winthrop (21:09.64). McKenzie Boyle of Dirigo was third, finishing in 21:19.57.

“It felt good (to win), I was kind of cold to start,” Mattson said. “It was kind of rough, but I got warmed up and it was fun to run with the girls in the woods. It’s definitely a goal of mine to get out and separate myself (from the group), then you just try to take your mind off the race and try to expand the gap.”

Mattson has already made a name for herself in her freshman year. She won her first high school race, the Scot Laliberte Invitational at Cony High in Augusta, set a Winthrop course record with a time of 19.56.84 on Sept. 17, and was the top freshman girls runner (18:55) at the Festival of Champions.

“She’s been so strong all season long, she’s just a real talent,” said Maranacook coach Casey Spencer. “She consistently works hard at everything she does and it continues to pay off.”

The Winthrop boys had five runners in the top 10 in the boys race. Aside from Cognata and Wess, Sam St. Germain (17:56.67) placed seventh, Michael Van Tassel (18:04.73) was eighth and Gianni Haefele (18:53.30) finished 10th.

The Winthrop boys won MVC and Class C South titles last year but finished runner-up at the state meet to Houlton/Greater Houlton Christian Academy.

“We had a plan and we executed it,” said Winthrop coach Ed Van Tassel. “I’m happy. I think next week at regionals, we’ll have a similar type of performance. And we’ve had states circled (on our calendars) since last year.”

Maranacook’s Harper Olmstead (23:59.94) finished 10th in the girls race.

“The team’s worked really hard,” Spencer said. “We’re feeling pretty good. We really have our eyes on the next two weekends (at regionals and states), to tell the truth. We worked really hard this past week and did our best (today), and it worked out really well for the girls.”

Temperatures were in the low 50s with a strong breeze, chilly for spectators but good conditions for runners as they danced in and out of the woods.

Morris and Mattson were named the MVC Runners of the Year. Van Tassel and Spencer are the Coaches of the Year.
