Tropical Storm Cristobal forms, as forecasters eye 2 other potential systems

Дата публикации: 12-08-2026 10:06:35

The National Hurricane Center in Miami began advisories on Tropical Storm Cristobal Wednesday as additional areas in the Atlantic could be primed for possible development later this week.
Cristobal, the third system of the 2026 season, is currently in the central tropical Atlantic waters and moving east-northeast at 16 mph. With 40 mph winds and an elongated structure, it poses no threat to the United States.

In the days ahead, the system is not expected to intensify nor bring any impacts to the Azores. As the system treks east, it is forecast to rapidly weaken in the next one to two days.
Looking south in the tropical Atlantic, the most likely area to develop into a tropical depression is a vigorous wave with an 80% chance for formation in the next two days.
The tropical wave will move towards the Lesser Antilles into the weekend, remaining just south of any fierce wind shear that may disrupt growth in the short term.
However, the current long-range trajectories will keep the system away from the United States while possibly enhancing shower coverage across the Caribbean where it’s desperately needed.
Puerto Rico’s ongoing drought and water rationing guidelines would benefit from any passing shower this wave, or potential tropical depression, could deliver.
Ok, 92L, interesting play overnight.

First thought is… if we can squeeze some rain 🌧️out, minus any tropical drama, this could be beneficial to the Caribbean. pic.twitter.com/WUOuxU7S6P— Ryan Phillips – NBC6 (@RyanNBC6) August 12, 2026
The second area to watch is just behind the aforementioned wave. Currently tagged with a “medium” chance for organization over the next 7 days, it’s possible that development chances may rise later this week and through the weekend as it moves westward across the low latitude Atlantic waters.
Should either of these two systems mature and acquire a name, Dolly is the fourth name on this year’s Atlantic basin list.
Across the tropics we’re entering the stretch of the season when the Atlantic historically becomes more productive. Although the climatological peak isn’t until around September 10, South Florida’s long term tropical cyclone risk steadily increases over the next several weeks.
For now, neither disturbance appears likely to have any meaningful impact on South Florida. However, this is the time of year when paying attention becomes increasingly important.
