MetLife Stadium will host eight games in June and July.
In less than a month, the city will welcome thousands of soccer fans to watch the men’s soccer World Cup.
“Everyone is welcome in New York. We welcome our immigrants. This is going to be an incredible, fun, safe summer,” Maya Handa, World Cup czar, said.
The five-and-a half week tournament in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada will pit 48 countries against each other, all vying for the chance to be crowned the greatest soccer team in the world.
With so many visitors expected in the city, officials are preparing early.
“Our city was chosen because of our incredible infrastructure, so there’s absolutely nothing to be worried about. Conversations have been in the works for years, and we are confident that our infrastructure can support this. Folks will be able to get where they need to go,” Handa said.
On Tuesday, Handa announced there will be additional ferry service during the tournament, with larger vessels operating on high-demand routes and more frequent weekend trips scheduled.
Five of the vessels used will be decorated to represent each borough.

MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, will host eight games in June and July. The first will be a match on Saturday, June 13, between Brazil and Morocco, and the last match will be the widely anticipated final on July 19.
Of the eight games, four will land on weekdays. The one on Tuesday, June 16, could potentially overlap with a New York Knicks playoff game if the team reaches the NBA Finals.
“The MTA is ready. We’re going to have expanded capacity on the trains. We’re not telling people to work from home. We want you to live your normal life. We don’t suggest you drive into Manhattan or drive to New Jersey. We want you to stay on public transportation,” Justin Brannan, New York State director of Major Event Operations, said.
To make the commute to the games more reasonable, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that there will be shuttle buses for $20 to the game, with a portion of the seats reserved for New Yorkers.

That’s far less than tickets for a game, which range in price from $1300 to over $17,000 on secondary markets.
For those who can’t splurge on tickets, the city and state will offer a lineup of free events, including fan zones in all five boroughs and Long Island.
“MetLife Stadium only fits about 80,000 fans, which means that the real World Cup experience is going to happen at bars and restaurants across the city,” Brannan said.
The city recently launched a “cultural passport” to encourage visitors to explore local neighborhoods while collecting stamps as part of a storytelling initiative.
Fifty streets outside city schools have been transformed into car-free soccer fields and block parties in the precursor to the World Cup.
“There’s an energy, a magic around the city that comes with the tournament,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on May 11.
Mamdani is the city’s first soccer mayor. A die-hard fan of Arsenal who, until his run for mayor, played in a recreational soccer league in Brooklyn.
The mayor added that he hopes his passion will catch on.
“We want this to be not just a time for people to turn on the TV, but a time for them to see themselves to be a player on that field in a few decades.”
