DEAR BETHANY: It is one of the most common questions I receive from grieving hearts: “Where do they go right after they pass? Are they sitting in the back pew at their own funeral, or are they missing the milestones we had planned together, like my upcoming wedding?”

When we lose someone we love, the physical absence feels like an unbridgeable chasm. We look at the empty chair at the reception or the flower-draped casket at the service, and the pain tells us they are gone. But as an evidential medium, I have spent years listening to the voices of the spirit world, and I can tell you with absolute certainty: Love does not expire with the physical body, and our loved ones do not miss the moments that matter to us.

Let’s start with the immediate aftermath of physical passing — the funeral. People often wonder if spirits hang around their own memorial services. The answer is yes, but perhaps not in the way you might imagine. They aren’t standing there weeping over their physical vessels. Instead, they are drawn to the collective energy of love, memories, and shared stories filling the room. Spirit is pure consciousness. When you gather to honor them, your thoughts act like a beacon.
