Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) and the Miami-Dade Community Services Department (CSD) teamed up on Saturday, July 18, to distribute Summer Savings Kits and free groceries to income-qualified families across Miami-Dade County.
The event, held at the CSD No Wrong Door Culmer Community Resource Center, provided residents with practical, easy-to-install energy-efficiency tools along with information on FPL programs designed to help households manage their summer energy bills.
“Through partnerships like this, we’re helping residents lower their energy costs, put food on the table, and access the resources they need to thrive,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “As more families face higher utility costs during periods of extreme summer heat, this assistance provides timely relief when it’s needed most. By working together, we can ease the financial burden on families, keep our community safe, and build a stronger, more resilient Miami-Dade.”
As temperatures climb, FPL is supporting customers with guidance to help them stay safe, keep cool and keep their energy costs as low as possible. Each Summer Savings Kit included energy-efficient items such as weatherstripping supplies, an air filter whistle, and LED lights.
“We know that summer heat can bring real financial pressure to families across South Florida, and we’re committed to making sure our customers have the tools and support they need to stay comfortable while managing their energy use,” said Bianca Soriano, FPL Customer Service communications manager. “Partnering with the CSD allows us to reach families directly in their own community with practical resources that can make a real difference this summer and throughout the year.”
Beyond energy savings, the event also addressed another critical need: food access. The Caring For Miami Mobile Market, a single-aisle, full-choice grocery store on wheels stocked with quality, nutritious food, provided free groceries to attendees.
By partnering with local organizations, churches, and food banks, the Mobile Food Market operates at various accessible locations, ensuring that individuals in food deserts or areas with limited grocery options can receive consistent support.
“Community is built by showing up for people when they need us most,” said Miami-Dade County Community Services Department director Cathy Burgos. “Events like this connect families with practical resources that ease financial stress and strengthen their path toward long-term stability.”
