‘Shark Snorkels' return to Birch Aquarium after a 7-year hiatus

Дата публикации: 16-07-2026 11:58:08

TAKE THE PLUNGE: Birch Aquarium — or if you want to be proper about it, Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego — is well-known for its fish-packed, fact-filled, fascinating-to-the-max exhibits. But sometimes, staff members and volunteers want to spread their wings, or perhaps “fins” is more accurate, and take a swim in the nearby ocean waves. And bringing some fish fans along for the adventure? That’s part of the fun of the Shark Snorkels, an educational adventure that went on hiatus in 2019. The underwater experience, which includes a guide leading participants through the “shallow waterways” near La Jolla, is returning to Birch Aquarium in late summer, all to give people a look at “local sharks and rays” in the area, with a focus on the Leopard Shark.
TWO HOURS, TOO COOL: Tickets for the glug-glug outing, which will last around 120 minutes, go on sale Aug. 1, and participants should be 10 years old or older (and, for sure, minors will need to have an adult present). The price? It’s $40 for the general public and $35 for Birch Museum members. Dates will begin in September, and spots are sure to fill up. “Although the ocean is in our backyard, it may seem daunting to take the first step beyond the waves,” said Matthew Arrollado, Public Programs Coordinator. “This program is an amazing opportunity to learn about and see some of La Jolla’s unique wildlife with an expert guide. Shark education and conservation are also critical for ocean health, so being able to share information about our local critters, including the docile Leopard Sharks, is such a privilege.”
SHARK SUMMER, the aquarium’s annual celebration of everything shark-tastic, is still in full swing, with a variety of programs and activities surfacing in the coming weeks. Learn more about this toothy to-do now, then set your clock, calendar, and/or wristwatch for Aug. 1, when Shark Snorkel tickets become available to buy.
