Suri and Willow's big road trip: Two roving otters are now at home in Monterey

GET-PLANNING APRIL? It’s generally the month when people begin thinking of a short summer road trip, the sort of on-the-highway adventure that will offer fresh horizons, new scenes, and the opportunity to experience life in a novel setting. If you’re in this gotta-hit-the-road mindset, you may want to either A) visit Monterey Bay Aquarium to admire two of their newest residents and/or B) find inspiration in the on-the-go tail, er, tale of these two cuties. The cuties in question? Hello, sweet Suri and wonderful Willow, the southern sea otters that recently joined the Cannery Row institution’s rollicking raft. The animals were both rescued in 2022 — Suri was just a four-week-old pup when she was discovered at a beach near Pacific Grove and young Willow was found at Carmel State Beach — and their rehabilitation journey began soon after at Monterey Bay Aquarium.
THE JOURNEY CONTINUES: After both critters were deemed “unreleasable” by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, they made a temporary home at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, where more TLC was given. Still another place on the map awaited the otters: Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, which welcomed the furry charmers as ambassadors in late 2022. After a spell in the Windy City burnishing new behaviors (such as “voluntarily walking onto a scale”), Suri and Willow returned to the Aquarium of the Pacific for further finessing of their otterly education, with “tool-use” on the syllabus. Now, they’re at home back where they started, Monterey Bay Aquarium, where they are called “excellent candidates for the Sea Otter Surrogacy Program.”
ADMIRE THE OTTERS… in person at the aquarium or by checking out the live Sea Otter Cam, which features frolicsome appearances by all the raft’s members. As for their notable names? Suri’s handle was inspired by Big Sur, while Willow was named after Willow Creek Picnic Area and Beach in Monterey. Both of their characters are shining through, too, reports aquarium staffers: Suri is “bold, independent, and explorative” while Willow has the whole “social” thing down pat, as well as “industrious” and “resourceful” traits.
