Dine under the Harvest Moon at one of California's earthiest abodes

ARTIST JAMES HUBBELL… created so many memorable works around Southern California and beyond, and finding them all, a worthy and uplifting goal, is as easy as starting with this map. You might have encountered the visionary’s work at the Julian Library, Lakeside’s River Park Conservatory, and the Vista Courthouse; sculptures, reliefs, and artworks grace a number of buildings and parks around the region. Fans of the artist, who worked toward peace and championed architecture that felt as though it arose straight from nature during his life, know the Santa Ysabel property well; it’s a singular spot full of soft curves and earthy hues and exquisite stained glass. While visiting the ethereal and earthy abode, a pastoral place James and Anne Hubbell called home, is possible on select dates, some special events do take place at the serene spot, which is just over an hour to the northwest when driving from San Diego. One of those evenings is coming up in September: It’s a Harvest Moon Dinner, and tickets are available now.

SATURDAY, SEPT. 26… is the date for the starlit supper, which begins in the mid-afternoon and concludes at 8 o’clock. Ada Limón, the 24th U.S. Poet Laureate, will read poetry at the dinner, which has a moving theme: Spirit Rising: The Power of Collective Energy. “Harvest Moon is one of our favorite events of the year as we bring together art enthusiasts, philanthropists and the community,” shares Marianne Gerdes, Executive Director of the Ilan-Lael Foundation. “Throughout the years, the event has continued to grow, but at its core, it celebrates art, nature, and the way they intersect.” A ticket is $175, and the schedule is live on the event site; moon-viewing will be the evening’s concluding event.
