Dungeons & Dragons 5e will be adding a brand-new character class in 2027, as the Psion is making its triumphant return in the new Dark Sun campaign setting books, giving adventurers the power to destroy things with their minds.

After grappling, no other rules have caused more issues in the history of Dungeons & Dragons than psionics, aka, supernatural mental powers. They've usually been too powerful or too complicated to manage. In the 5e era, psionics were reduced to subclasses for existing roles, like the Soulknife Rogue, where the character is given a handful of telekinetic or telepathic powers, which mostly function in the same way as existing spells or abilities.

The Psion Is Officially Coming To Dungeons & Dragons In Dark Sun

Wizards of the Coast revealed at Gen Con 2026 that Dungeons & Dragons is bringing back the Dark Sun campaign setting in 2027, with three new books: Blood and Power (gameplay content), Edge of Oblivion (the lore book for Dungeon Masters), and a limited edition Player's Handbook featuring Dark Sun art. It's in these books that the Psion will be coming to Dungeons & Dragons, with a full level 1-20 ability spread, subclasses, and spells.

Fans have already had a taste of what the Psion can do, as it appeared in an Unearthed Arcana play test document. The Psion is a primary spellcaster who specializes in Enchantment spells, has drastically boosted Psychic damage magic, and gains Psionic Dice that can be spent to bolster their abilities. The four Psion subclasses are the Metamorph, who uses psionics to alter their body; Psi Warper, which can teleport around with ease; Psykinetic, who is the master of telekineses; and Telepath, who reads minds as if they were books.

Monsters Are The Most Feared Psions In Dungeons & Dragons

It makes sense for the Psion to return in the Dark Sun books, considering just how important the class is in that world. In Dark Sun, arcane magic requires the destruction of plant life to be used, which is why the world has been devastated, consisting mostly of deserts. By comparison, psonics have no cost to the environment, and can be used without problems.

Players aren't the only people with psionics in Dark Sun, as many creatures in the setting developed tremendous mental powers. Chief among these is Borys of Ebe, the only living dragon in the world, who is a master of arcane magic and of psionics, as well as being a colossal lizard. Psions might be a rarity in other campaign settings, but in Dark Sun, anyone can be a threat if they put their mind to it.
