Spectrum is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest after fiber optic lines were cut in Baldwin Hills on Aug. 7, causing service outages in Beverly Hills, Fairfax, West Hollywood, Koreatown and other parts of Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that officers responded to a radio call of vandalism in the 5400 block of Obama Boulevard at 9:31 a.m. Officers arrived at the scene and took a report. Police were unable to confirm whether the matter remains under investigation.

Spectrum said its fiber optic lines were intentionally cut in what the company characterized as a criminal attack on communications infrastructure. The damage severed more than 1,400 fibers, requiring crews to splice the lines back together. Service was restored to affected customers later that day.

“Today is the latest in a number of attacks that have impacted customers,” Spectrum said in a statement. “Criminal attacks on communications infrastructure are a growing issue affecting the entire telecommunications industry, not just Spectrum. These acts are not only a crime but threaten public safety.”

Spectrum emphasized that the company’s fiber optic lines do not contain copper.

Telecommunications infrastructure has historically been targeted by thieves seeking copper and other valuable metals, but fiber optic cables transmit data through strands of glass or plastic rather than copper wiring.

Spectrum cited data from the Communications Cable and Connectivity Association showing that the telecommunications industry experienced 15,540 attacks on infrastructure nationwide between June 2024 and June 2025, affecting more than 9.5 million customers.

A similar incident disrupted Verizon service in Southern California two days after the Spectrum lines were cut. On Aug. 9, Verizon reported that vandalism to fiber lines caused outages affecting customers across parts of the region. No connection between the Aug. 7 Spectrum incident and the Verizon vandalism has been established.

Spectrum urged members of the public to report suspicious activity around communications infrastructure.
