IPSWICH, Mass. – Robert Bruce Benson, 90, passed away peacefully on Aug. 1, 2026.

Born in Boston, Mass. on Dec. 12, 1935, Bob grew up in Back Bay and cherished childhood summers at his family’s farm in Acton, Maine. At 19, he entered the Navy and earned his wings. When he made his first aircraft carrier landing at the age of 20, he became the youngest Navy pilot to have done so. Following his Naval service, he flew for the Naval Reserve and as a commercial pilot for Eastern Air Lines for nearly 15 years.

After marrying the love of his life, Alexis, the couple moved to Litchfield, Maine, where they raised their family and operated a small sheep farm. It was there that Bob discovered a second calling in public service, eventually serving as Town Manager of Richmond and then Town Manager of Cumberland for nearly 25 years.

Bob approached municipal government as an opportunity to shape the future. Long before conservation became a priority for many communities, he championed the protection of natural lands, expanded recreational opportunities, and advocated for accessible housing. His vision helped shape local landmarks including Twin Brook Recreation Area, Val Halla Golf & Recreation Center, and numerous coastal access initiatives on Great Chebeague Island. In 1996, he received the Blanchard Bates Conservation Award for his commitment to thoughtful community planning.

A devoted father and grandfather, Bob rarely missed a game or school event, cheering from the sidelines with a McDonald’s coffee in hand. After retirement, he and Alexis spent eight years in Florida before settling in Ipswich, Mass., to be closer to their family. An avid athlete, Bob discovered running in his 40s and continued running well into his 80s.

Bob is survived by his wife of 55 years, Alexis Benson; his daughter, Ellen Benson and her son, Noah; his daughter, Tama Donovan, her husband Dan, and their sons, Ned and Eliot; his son, Rob Benson; and his brother, Alan Benson. His legacy lives on through his family, whose lives were forever shaped by his stories, infectious laughter, and unwavering support.

Private family services will be held. Arrangements by the Campbell Funeral Home, 6 High St., Ipswich, Mass. Information, directions, condolences at http://www.campbellfuneral.com .

Memorial contributions may be made to Home Base at Massachusetts General Hospital (homebase.org).
