BRUNSWICK – Thomas Paul Bowen, 79, passed away peacefully on Aug. 4, 2026, after a brief and heroic battle with cancer. Tom was an incredible man, husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend. Creative and process-oriented, Tom was an excellent cook, an avid gardener, an accomplished woodworker, and a talented golfer. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved laughing with his friends and family. Our lives will always be so much less without him.
Born in Buffalo, N.Y., Tom was the youngest son of Robert and Lillian Bowen. He grew up in Westvale, a suburb of Syracuse, N.Y., along with his older siblings Kathy and Ron. He graduated from West Hill High School in 1965 and earned a business degree from New Hampshire College in 1969. An accomplished accountant and consummate professional, Tom spent his career serving as financial controller for several companies: the R.E. Dietz Company, Oneida Molded Plastics, Finetone Hearing Company, and Megquier & Jones Inc. After he retired, Tom enjoyed many years of traveling with his wife, Marypat, golfing with his friends, gardening, and exploring Maine.
Tom and Marypat were married on Nov. 18, 1983, and welcomed their daughter, Emily, in December 1984. They lived in Camillus and Cazenovia, N.Y. before becoming Mainers in 1993, fulfilling Marypat’s lifelong dream of living in Maine. Over the past 33 years, the Bowen family lived in three wonderful homes in Round Pond, Pownal, and Brunswick.
When Marypat became critically ill in 2016, Tom was her steadfast and loving caregiver and advocate. Despite her complex health situation, he was committed to bringing her home where he singlehandedly coordinated her home health services and performed much of her care himself, including at-home dialysis. Tom’s care for Marypat was not only a true testament of his love but also a testament of the kind of person he was: someone who always stood up for what’s right and took care of the people he loved.
Tom is survived by his daughter, Emily Bowen Hughes; grandson, Henry Hughes; son-in-law, Michael Hughes; brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Cheryl Bowen and their daughters Lindsay and Dana; and many beloved sisters- and brothers-in-law; nieces, nephews; and wonderful friends who brought so much joy to his life.
Tom was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marypat; his parents, Robert and Lillian Bowen; his sister, Kathleen Hanson, and brother-in-law, Andy Hanson; his niece, Cathy Czopp Leising; and his brother- and sister-in-law, Michael and Cheri Walker.
Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at the Brackett’s Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at St. John the Baptist Church, 39 Pleasant St., Brunswick. Memories and condolences can be shared at http://www.brackettfh.com.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Oasis Free Clinics, a Maine-based no-cost medical and dental clinic serving the uninsured, where Tom volunteered for many years.
