Double the Corpse Flower: The Huntington will soon have two smelly blooms

If there was a month that could be handed the crown of “mostest” when it comes to lush, shimmering, green, and leafy growing things, July would be considered to be a serious contender.
We’re not in the little, tiny sprigs and shoots season of spring, but rather the boldest stretch of go-big summer.
So it is really no surprise, and it is an utter delight, that not one but two titans of the plant world are making the mostest of mid-July at The Huntington.
We’re not playing around with the term “titans,” either: These are Corpse Flowers, or Amorphophallus titanum, if you please. They are regal and rare specimens, so rare, in fact, that when one blooms it becomes an event.
And such an amazing event has arrived in duplicate at the San Marino garden, where Odora and Odorysseus will soon unfurl their frilly and sizable spathes and briefly bloom. Or, yes, enjoy “an odyssey of their own.”
Every Corpse Flower featured at The Huntington receives its own memorable name, quite famously, with Green Boy and Stankosaurus Rex making smelly and sensational showings in recent years.
For the most notable part of this bloom is its stenchy scent, something your nose can detect if you linger within a few feet of the fully opened flower.
Another jaw-dropping fact that is straight from the “alien or earthling” files? A Corpse Flower can grow several inches in the course of a day. Not a week, not a month, a single day.
Jaws may drop, and noses may be pinched, in the presence of these two fantastical floral superstars, but memories will also be made. After all, it isn’t every day that a pair of Corpse Flowers open, side by side, let alone a single specimen.
And if you’re seeking something rather sweet in this smelly scene, this is it: Odora and Odorysseus “… are siblings from a 2002 pollination,” and this is the first “public” bloom for Odorysseus (Odora previously opened in 2024).
