An 18-year-old good Samaritan who stopped to help after a crash on a Fort Worth freeway was killed early Friday when another driver struck him, leaving friends and loved ones grieving a young man they described as kind, loving, and always willing to help.
Fort Worth Police said officers were called to the 4200 block of South Freeway at about 2:30 a.m. for a major crash. Habib Dwabe and a group of friends came upon the crash shortly after leaving the Stockyards and stopped to help.
Pablo Perales said he got out of the car first and ran toward the person who needed help. He said another driver then crashed into the already-crashed vehicle and struck Dwabe.
“I don’t know if he was drunk or I don’t know if he thought it was ordinary traffic,” Perales said.
The impact sent Dwabe over the median and into oncoming traffic, where he was hit by another vehicle. His friends pulled him to safety, but his injuries were too severe. He died at the scene.

For those who knew Dwabe, friends said it was unsurprising that he spent his final moments trying to help someone else.
“I just want people to know that he was a very kind person, very loving person, very joyful person. He was one of a kind actually,” Perales said.
Sonya Espinoza, a close family friend, said she has struggled to understand why Dwabe was given such a short life, but believes that if faced with the same situation again, he still would have stopped to help.
NBC 5 first met Dwabe in August 2017, when he was 9 years old. At the time, he was a student and model who was growing out his hair to donate it to a company that makes wigs for cancer patients.
“I don’t want to cut my hair,” Habib said in 2017. “I want it long enough to donate it, and I want people to stop calling me girl and to stop playing with it.”
Along with his mother, Dwabe also protested his school’s gender-based hair policy over his long, curly hair.
Espinoza remembered the close relationship Dwabe shared with his mother, saying he would give her a hug every time he walked by her.

“They just had that tight-knit relationship. And he was just an amazing kid,” Espinoza said.
Dwabe later graduated from Joshua ISD and had recently returned from visiting family in Lebanon. His mother, Faye Abunijmeh, told NBC 5 that traditional Muslim funeral services will be held Saturday.
Police confirmed the driver who struck Dwabe now faces a charge of intoxicated manslaughter. The driver has been identified as 27-year-old Sergio Escorza.
In the wake of Dwabe’s death and other similar tragedies, Fort Worth police urged bystanders to avoid stopping on busy highways unless absolutely necessary and instead call 911 for help.
According to police, the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
