A man is dead after stealing an ambulance belonging to the Fort Worth Fire Department and driving it to Austin, officials say.
According to the Fort Worth Fire Department, the ambulance was stolen from Fire Station 4 at 2954 Old Mansfield Road in Fort Worth on Thursday morning.
Fort Worth Fire Department officials said multiple agencies were involved in searching for the stolen vehicle.
The vehicle was later located in Austin, almost 200 miles away.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, state troopers were notified at 6:30 a.m. that the stolen ambulance was traveling southbound on I-35 in Williamson County. Troopers attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver refused to stop.
The DPS said the driver took the ambulance onto South U.S. 290 and intentionally rammed multiple vehicles and evaded DPS troopers. DPS said the ambulance continued ramming vehicles as it drove onto the upper deck of I-35, at which point a DPS trooper shot the driver, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The local firefighters union told NBC5 no members were hurt or threatened in any way, but the incident is concerning to them, and they want some accountability from the city.
“We don’t have the facilities or the guidelines to park ambulances in most stations. So most ambulances and footwear stay out on the apron, ready for deployment for the neighborhood,” said Zac Schaffer, Fort Worth Professional Firefighters Association President.
Schaffer said they keep the trucks running to keep medicine and blood climate-controlled. He explained that since the city eliminated Medtar EMS services and absorbed them into the fire department, they have been overwhelmed.
“We’ve always deployed fire trucks in most stations, but not ambulances. That’s new in the last year. And we have very, very few stations where we house an ambulance inside the station alongside the fire truck,” he said.
Schaffer explained that the union is asking for the following measures:
We are formally requesting a review of any policies related to security of emergency response vehicles when firefighters, paramedics, EMTs are not with that vehicle and to identify any policy/procedures that need to be updated and to include any funding that needs to be identified to fix those policies and procedures
We are in a situation in the city where we have taken on an ambulance system and put inside a fire department that was not built for ambulance vehicles. A lot of our stations do not have the room for an ambulance.
That is of some concern that we have aging infrastructure that does not meet today’s needs
A spokesperson for the city of Fort Worth told NBC5 in a statement that they are reviewing policies for “overall safety and consistent compliance” and added that a “full investigation is underway to determine whether existing policies were followed.
