Did Apple Cut Corners On The iPhone 18 Pro Display And Flash Memory? What Tests Reveal

Independent testing indicates that Apple may have made compromises on component quality across its iPhone 18 Pro series, with evaluations highlighting notable regressions in display performance alongside earlier concerns regarding storage speeds.

Recent evaluations published by the testing channel Poorplayer on Weibo reveal that the Samsung G9N OLED panel utilized in the iPhone 18 Pro exhibits reduced color accuracy at narrow viewing angles compared to the iPhone 17 Pro. Measurements tracking Just Noticeable Color Difference (JNCD) show that perceptible shifts appear around 20 degrees off-axis under subtle horizontal tilt. The color variance escalates to a peak near 3.0 JNCD between 35 and 40 degrees, accompanied by an increasingly pronounced green tint. Historically, Samsung-supplied G9N panels maintained a clear viewing-angle advantage over LG Display equivalents, making this performance dip at standard viewing angles particularly noticeable.

Across 0°–40° horizontal viewing angles, the iPhone 17 Pro’s G9N panel shows color drift peaking near 2.2 JNCD (Just Noticeable Color Difference) between 40° and 55° of vertical tilt.

For the iPhone 18 Pro’s G9N panel (0°–40° horizontal), color drift exceeds noticeable thresholds at 20° off-axis, peaking near 3.0 JNCD at roughly 35°–40° of vertical tilt.

Supply-chain cost reductions

Industry reporting suggests these technical changes coincide with aggressive supply-chain cost reductions. According to the Korean publication The Elec, Apple targeted an OLED procurement price of approximately $70 per panel for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, with supplier negotiations potentially dropping figures as low as $66.50. This represents an estimated 20% price reduction compared to the $80 cost reported for the previous generation. While no direct link between procurement discounts and screen performance has been formally verified, the aggressive pricing provides context for the measured regression.

That part before the line is where the color difference is most noticeable.

These findings follow prior hardware analyses by Homolab concerning solid-state storage variances. Testing showed that while the 256GB and 512GB tiers continue using standard TLC NAND, the premium 1TB and 2TB models incorporate slower QLC NAND sourced from SK Hynix. Consequently, sustained write speeds drop sharply once internal SLC and TLC caches become exhausted.

If this had happened with almost any Android flagship brand, the backlash would probably be massive by now.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at an entry price of $1,199 in the United States, though hardware behavior may vary between individual production batches.
