Jamel Dean returns to Raymond James Stadium on Sunday, but this time, the veteran cornerback will be wearing Pittsburgh Steelers colors. After seven seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dean faces his former team for the first time since leaving in free agency.

Dean helped the Buccaneers win Super Bowl LV in 2020 and remained in Tampa through the 2025 season. His departure brought an end to a seven-year run with the franchise, setting up Sunday’s reunion against familiar faces.

The matchup also gives Dean an opportunity to face Todd Bowles, his former head coach and defensive coordinator. Speaking with Sports Illustrated’s Nick Farabaugh, Dean described the return as an emotional experience.

“It kinda feels like it’s going to be student finally going against the teacher. I can’t wait to see how everything unravels,” Dean said. “It’ll be a bittersweet moment for me. When I go into the stadium, hopefully I don’t go on autopilot and walk into their locker room.”

Dean’s experience in Tampa Bay could give Pittsburgh’s offense useful insight into Bowles’ defensive system. According to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, the former Buccaneers cornerback has already shared potential clues with the Steelers’ offensive players.

Dean, however, isn’t convinced that information will provide a significant advantage. He knows Bowles well enough to expect his former coach to anticipate the Steelers’ preparations.

“I gave [the Steelers offense] little nuggets of what could possibly happen,” Dean said. “But knowing [Bowles], he’s probably planning for this right now, so won’t be much use.”

The Buccaneers enter Sunday’s matchup looking to improve their record to 2-4. Dean’s familiarity with Tampa Bay’s defense could help Pittsburgh prepare, but Bowles will have an opportunity to counter that knowledge.

For Dean, the game marks an emotional return to the organization where he spent seven seasons and won a Super Bowl. Now, he’ll try to help his new team leave Tampa Bay with a victory.
