The Tampa Bay Buccaneers suffered another devastating collapse, blowing a fourth-quarter lead before losing 26-19 in overtime. What looked like a potential statement victory quickly became another frustrating example of Tampa Bay failing to finish.
First-Half Defense Delivers, Offense Finds Its FootingThe Buccaneers’ opening drive was ugly, but the offense eventually found its footing. Pittsburgh made stopping Tampa Bay’s running game a clear priority.
Yaya Diaby delivered a huge defensive play by tipping an Aaron Rodgers pass. A’Shawn Robinson grabbed the deflection for his second interception of the season.
Special teams were mostly solid, although Tampa Bay continued flirting with disaster on its punts. The unit looked determined to give Pittsburgh a chance to block one.
Josiah Trotter continued making his case as one of the draft’s biggest steals at linebacker. The rookie’s performance provided another encouraging development for Tampa Bay’s defense.
Jalon Daniels remained steady while facing pressure from Pittsburgh’s defense. Rueben Bain Jr. recorded his first sack, and his college teammate Keionte Scott followed with a sack of Rodgers.
Conservative Play-Calling Lets Pittsburgh Back Into the GameOffensive coordinator Zac Robinson occasionally overthinks his approach. And Todd Bowles has been notorious for playing soft coverage when having the lead. Allowing Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy to hang around is rarely a winning strategy.
Unfortunately, Todd Bowles’ trademark cushion coverage reappeared at the worst possible time. Tampa Bay’s defense began surrendering easy completions instead of maintaining the aggressive approach that worked earlier.
Daniels and the offense looked increasingly disorganized in the second half. The rookie threw a costly fourth-quarter interception as Pittsburgh continued gaining momentum.
The Buccaneers’ defense also began taking a beating. Al-Quadin Muhammad delivered a massive sack on Rodgers, temporarily helping Tampa Bay slow Pittsburgh’s comeback.
With eight minutes remaining, Tampa Bay clung to a three-point lead. The offense had an opportunity to put the game away, but instead went three-and-out.
In classic Buccaneers fashion, the apparent strategy became protecting the lead rather than extending it. That conservative mindset gave Rodgers and Pittsburgh another opportunity to take control.
Tampa Bay Blows Another LeadBowles’ soft coverage returned, and Pittsburgh quickly moved into field-goal range. A questionable pass-interference penalty against Tampa Bay helped the Steelers advance.
A’Shawn Robinson and David Walker then combined for a sack on Rodgers. The play forced Pittsburgh into a 58-yard field-goal attempt, which the Steelers converted to tie the game at 16.
Tampa Bay surrendered the lead in the fourth-quarter. The defense had dominated earlier, but the familiar coverage problems returned when protecting a lead became the priority.
The Buccaneers received the ball with two minutes remaining and two timeouts. Unfortunately, former Tampa Bay cornerback Jamel Dean intercepted Daniels and returned the ball inside the five-yard line.
That turnover nearly handed Pittsburgh the game outright. Tampa Bay’s defense responded by holding the Steelers to a field goal, keeping the deficit manageable.
The Steelers made the kick to take a three-point lead. Tampa Bay’s offense received another opportunity with just over a minute remaining and one timeout.
Daniels moved the Buccaneers into position for a potential game-tying field goal. However, an unnecessary sack made Chase McLaughlin’s attempt considerably more difficult.
McLaughlin nevertheless connected from 53 yards. The veteran kicker delivered again, tying the game at 19 and forcing overtime.
Overtime Collapse Completes the Disastrous FinishTampa Bay won the overtime coin toss and elected to put Pittsburgh’s offense on the field. The defense immediately faced another opportunity to stop Rodgers and regain possession.
Diaby made an important tackle for loss, setting up a critical third-and-long situation. Pittsburgh immediately converted against Tampa Bay’s soft coverage.
Anzalone then missed a tackle, allowing another significant gain as Pittsburgh approached field-goal range. Even the broadcast team pointed out how badly the Buccaneers’ cushion coverage was hurting the defense.
Pittsburgh continued running the ball down Tampa Bay’s throat. Rodgers eventually connected with a receiver for a touchdown, giving the Steelers a seven-point lead with just over three minutes remaining.
Daniels opened the ensuing possession with a one-yard run up the middle. He then missed a wide-open Emeka Egbuka before missing another opportunity to find Bucky Irving.
The rookie quarterback scrambled for a first down on fourth-and-nine, keeping Tampa Bay’s comeback hopes alive. However, the offense couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity.
Two crucial drops, one by Chris Godwin and another by Tez Johnson, left Tampa Bay facing fourth-and-eight. Pittsburgh blitzed, sacked Daniels, and ended the Buccaneers’ comeback attempt.
The Steelers escaped with a 26-19 overtime victory. Tampa Bay had completely squandered a game it controlled for much of the afternoon.
The Same Old Buccaneers Problems ResurfaceTampa Bay’s first-half defense was lights-out. Once the Buccaneers established a substantial lead, however, the defensive approach shifted back toward soft coverage.
Rodgers and Pittsburgh took advantage of the extra space, steadily moving the ball and exposing Tampa Bay’s inability to close out games. The defense’s late collapse erased much of the positive work completed earlier.
The offensive approach also deserves scrutiny. Conservative play-calling, missed opportunities, and costly mistakes left the defense repeatedly defending a shrinking advantage.
Daniels made several important plays, but the rookie ultimately faced an uphill battle. Putting an undrafted rookie quarterback in that position after surrendering a huge lead is a dangerous formula.
The Buccaneers didn’t simply lose a close game. They blew another lead in the fourth-quarter, surrendered control in overtime, and walked away with another painful lesson about finishing games.
