Barbour is synonymous with waxed cotton, but its latest reinterpretation of the iconic Bedale jacket utilizes another hardy, weather-resistant fabric with deep roots in the British Isles.

The Tartan Bedale Wool Jacket moves Barbour’s familiar tartan from the lining to the outer shell, using dense woven wool from the renowned Abraham Moon & Sons mill.

This remixed Bedale uses a new variation of Barbour’s signature blue, green, red, yellow, black and white tartan called Shadow Classic Tartan.

Barbour explains that it is made from a tweed-like fabric that amplifies wool’s natural water-resistant and thermal-regulating properties.

The fabric comes from Moon, a British textile manufacturer that has been in business since 1837 and is used by brands ranging from J.Crew to Sunspel.

The jacket is cut to the standard Bedale pattern, featuring raglan shoulders, hand-warmer pockets, bellows waist pockets, a storm flap, a throat latch and a two-way zipper.

The collar is lined with the familiar fine-wale corduroy in black.

Moon’s wool tartan might not be as weather-resistant as waxed cotton, but it is plenty durable and much warmer.

The jacket’s insulation is amplified with a polyester box-quilted lining, making it substantially warmer than a standard-issue Bedale.

Along with Barbour’s signed snaps and zipper pull, you’ll find Moon’s signature patch stitched to the inside of the storm flap.

Barbour’s Tartan Bedale Wool Jacket is now available from Barbour for $730. That’s a substantial markup over the Classic Bedale’s $425 SRP, but it is on par with the luxury jackets and suits where you typically find Moon wool fabrics.
