Arsenal went into the break having lost for the first time this season, beaten 3-0 at Brighton through Pascal Gross, Charalampos Kostoulas and Chema Andres. Mikel Arteta was blunt afterwards about the basics his side had failed to get right.

The break brought better news off the pitch, with Arteta signing a new long-term contract. Home has been the comfortable part of Arsenal’s season, with goals at one end and very little given up at the other.

Leeds are fifth and still unbeaten. Daniel Farke’s side have beaten Nottingham Forest and then Newcastle United 4-1, and drawn with Brentford, Brighton and Crystal Palace.

They also managed something Arsenal could not, taking a point off Brighton. Their defence has been among the meanest in the division, and a win here would lift them level on points with the champions.

Arteta’s international break was expensive. Declan Rice, Ezri Konsa, Kai Havertz, Max Dowman and Christos Tzolis all withdrew from their national squads injured, with Rice and Konsa not thought to be serious, while Ben White and Cristhian Mosquera are both doubtful and William Saliba remains the long-term absentee.

Leeds came through it more lightly. Jean-Matteo Bahoya turned an ankle with France’s under-21s and is a doubt alongside Harry Wilson, while Daniel James, Mateo Joseph and Joe Rodon are all out.

Arsenal have had much the better of this fixture in recent seasons, and their squad depth may tell on a weekend when both managers are working round absentees.
