One of the country’s biggest auditors could be probed by industry regulators after Manchester City was found guilty of the biggest cheating scandal in British sporting history.

BDO has signed off City’s accounts since 2007 – including over the nine years the football club was found to have breached financial rules to the tune of £900million between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons.

A damning verdict published by the Premier League said an independent commission found that in that time ‘the club filed misstated accounts and concealed the true state of its finances from its auditors and football regulators’.

But the Mail understands BDO could still face an investigation by the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) over its role in the scandal.

The FRC declined to comment.

But accounting industry sources said the regulator was ‘aware’ of the situation and ‘looking into it to see of there is anything that would fall under [its] remit’.

They said ‘there may be questions about the auditor in question’ but added that the fact Manchester City misled its auditors ‘has complications in itself’.

BDO said it was ‘bound by confidentiality so cannot comment on this occasion’.

BDO is no stranger to FRC investigations having been fined £7.4million over two separate probes in 2025-26 alone.

That represented more than half of all the £12.9million penalties handed out by the regulator that year.

The Manchester City scandal has sparked calls for a police investigation that could even involve the Serious Fraud Office.

Lord Cruddas, whose financial trading firms CMC Markets sponsors Everton FC, said: ‘Surely the Man City findings are now a police matter.

‘If accounts have been falsified and auditors have been misled then it is potentially a criminal matter.

‘The auditors will call in the police, directors are personally liable for any fraud of a UK company even if it is foreign owned.’

Former FA and City chairman David Bernstein has also said the case may ‘need to be looked at by outside authorities’.

A Serious Fraud Office spokesman said: ‘In line with long established practice to avoid prejudice to law enforcement activity, we can neither confirm nor deny any investigation into this matter.’
