Dallas Cowboys defensive additions making big difference at training camp

The Dallas Cowboys defense is looking much improved after one of the worst seasons in franchise history.
The Cowboys have a new defensive coordinator, Christian Parker; two new first-round picks, Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence; and they added San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dee Winters to the group with returning starting safety Malik Hooker.
Hooker said the new guys are helping what was a struggling group.
“It’s just about repetition at this point now. Building it, putting it all together. We’ve got a lot of young guys that I can say right now are just playing their butts off, making plays. That’s what makes the team so special for us. Not only the old guys making the plays and the communication stuff, but you can take the old guys out. You can put the young guys out there and they’ll be just as good, so special to see,” Hooker said.
Starting quarterback Dak Prescott sees it too.
“I don’t know if I can say just one player because of the intensity,” Prescott said. “The D(efensive) B(ack)s are, you know, screaming because they feel like they locked us down. And, you know, it was like, oh, it was only the rush. But the times, you know, the rush gets there, and the DBs do get a chance to make a play. Yeah. It’s just the collaborative effort of their intensity and their communication is felt. It’s definitely felt when we’re just out there, and we’re motioning and we’re making our calls, and then post-play, any time that they’ve made a play, they’ve celebrated deservedly so. And I just think that raises the energy of the whole team.”
Winters, who played for TCU in college, spoke about the excitement of joining the Cowboys as well as his long commute from Arlington to Frisco.
“Yeah, during OTAs, I was making that hour and 15 every day and it sucked. But yeah, during the season, I’ll probably get something midway. That’ll be a little bit more helpful. So excited for that, for sure,” Winters said
Winters grew up in Brenham, between Austin and Houston. He said his grandmother was not a Cowboys fan, so they’re both learning to love his new team.
“Whenever I would go home to my grandma’s, she would never watch any other team except the Cowboys. So that’s what I had to watch growing up,” Winters said. “She’s excited. She talked about it not too long ago. And. I’m just grateful that I get to put a star on my head.”
2025 third-round draft pick Shavon Revel, a corner back, is having a strong camp of his own. Revel barely played last season due to a knee injury he suffered in college. Revel said he was a big fan of new Parker, the new DC.
“Man, intentionality, bro, the way he wants to come out here and perform. He tells me every day, know what I mean? Use your abilities, use your skills, man; you’re 1% out of league, man. You’re lengthy, you fast, got long arms, strong, you know what I mean? It’s me; it’s my responsibility to be there for myself and believe in myself at the end of the day, cuz I have the coaches that believe in me. So I also gotta believe in myself, so that’s exactly what he does for me,” Revel said.
The Cowboys also extended defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, locking in a centerpiece of the defense through 2030.
