NBC 5's Pat Doney sits down with Cowboys Pro Bowl DT Quinnen Williams

Not many starters for the Dallas Cowboys played in Saturday’s preseason win over the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, including Quinnen Williams. Williams, often referred to as “Q,” is gearing up for his first full season with the Cowboys. Williams was acquired in a midseason trade with the New York Jets to fix last year’s struggling Cowboys defense.
The defense never got it turned around, but Williams proved his value to the team, earning a $100m contract extension earlier in training camp. Williams sat down with NBC 5’s Pat Doney to talk about his future with the team.
“I just think it’s the people around me, the people that’s here. To be around a group of guys with, like, mindsets, a group of guys with the same objective and the same goal, and being around a bunch of great leaders, man, not only on the football team, but the coaching staff also. Man. So it just gives me a lot of joy, a lot of hope, a lot of faith, and just makes me want to work harder, man. So I’m just excited about getting a chance to go against all of the Tylers (Guyton, Smith), every day (Cooper Beebe), every day, man, get a chance to be able to speed up my pass rusher before Dak gets out to get the ball out. just different things like that. Man, that’s been challenging this training camp and just be helping me become good,” Williams said.
Williams has been in a battle with Pro Bowl Guard Tyler Smith about who is the strongest player on the team. Neither player will be giving up the title without a fight.
“Yeah. Going against him has been unbelievable, man. You see why he was great. The number one interior offensive lineman in the NFL, man. And just being able to battle with him week in, week out every single day in training camp is just getting me better. And I know for sure get him better. Because he always comes to talk to me after the end of practice about what I see. I asked him what he’s seeing, different things like that, and how he sits down on power and different things like that. So it’s been fun, man. So it’s super dope to get a chance to definitely make the major statement: iron sharpens iron, coming to action. And I’m just enjoying it,” Williams said.
Williams comes from football royalty; he was a four-star recruit, according to ESPN, for the University of Alabama and college coaching legend Nick Saban.
“It was unbelievable playing for one of the greatest of all time, man. You just understand the philosophy that he has, makes you successful. Wherever you go, whatever organization you go to, whatever you do in life, man. So no matter if I’m in New York or now in Dallas, I just still use his same philosophy, the same mindset that he instilled in me, and the same work ethic that he instilled. Man. So, I wouldn’t be the player I am in the NFL today without going through those lessons, going through those character builds, and the things that he taught me. So I’m still kind of utilizing the day,” Williams said.
Williams is also an avid golfer.
“I got a chance to be blessed to go to the Masters, and I got a chance to, like, see the professionals and see the guys that, every single swing, every single play, no matter if it’s a good swing or a bad swing or a good hit or a bad hit. It’s similar to how I am in football when it comes down to playing all four quarters, and you’re playing me versus me, and that’s kind of on the football field. You’ve got to have that same mindset, me versus me, to get better every single day. So I fell in love with it. My wife pushed me to be into it, like, find a hobby. And now that I found a hobby, she kind of like, oh, I want you to be home more. So. But it’s fun, man. I truly love it. I study it, you know, all season, man. And I love it, man,” Williams said.
Williams also gives back. The Quinnen Williams Foundation addresses and alleviates challenges related to education, youth, and single-family households, according to its website.
“It matters a lot because, growing up, the first time I ever met an NFL player, was Mario Addison, and I was in, like, the I believe the I believe, like, the sixth grade. And that was so inspiring to me and kind of pushed me to be great, to push me to do the things I need to do so I can be in his shoes. And, man, I always thought to myself, when I become an NFL player, an NFL player in the future, I’m gonna do the same thing because he inspired me to become an NFL player. So, not only just NFL. Man, but just be an inspiration to be a good person. It’s a near and dear passion of mine to give back a near and dear pass to my family, to give back. And it’s just super exciting to be able to help somebody that’s in need or help somebody in general,” Williams said.
But Williams said his focus is winning, but more importantly, playing for his teammates.
“I think that being able to be a part of this organization, that overpowers the drive. So you see the passion that they bring every single day to be able to lift that trophy up and dominate in the playoffs. And for a guy that’s never been to the playoffs, is it just it’s just fulfilling to be on the side, on the same side of the ball with guys who got the same mindset of not only just going, making it to the playoffs, but dominating the playoffs and lifting that trophy up. So, we got a long way to go. We got hard work ahead of us, and it’s just joyful to be a part of the team that embraced the hard work to not only just make it in the league, but just dominate here,” Williams said.
