No, don't worry, you were right (or at least, close enough)!

Dr. Eggman has always been called Dr. Eggman in Japan, but in the manuals for the western release, he was changed to Dr. Ivo Robotnik by SEGA of America, probably because they thought it sounded better. Old games used to get localised like this all the time, and there were three American 90s Sonic cartoons that went on to reinforce the Robotnik name, as well as American and UK comics.

Jump ahead to Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast, the first full 3D Sonic game, and the characters were all due to be voiced for the first time. To unify the discrepancy, SEGA decided that "Ivo Robotnik" would be the character's real name, and that "Eggman" was a cheeky nickname Sonic gave him, one which Eggman would then adopt in order to overcome Sonic's attempt to undermine his ego. This has been the rule ever since, with Jim Carrey's incarnation officially called Ivo Robotnik but often referred to as Eggman.

Heh, no, it wasn't the error! No spoilers in case you ever get interested (and if you know that's never gonna happen, let me know and I'll circle back) but let's just say that the Sonic 3 movie got good reviews for including actual, legit feels in its story. Which came as no surprise to long-time fans who recognised the source material it was set to adapt, but even so, it went further than I expected it to!

Ah, so close! Shadow is also a hedgehog (well... actually, Shadow gets complicated, don't worry about him) but alas, Knuckles is an echidna. There's a whole bunch of lore to explain why the difference matters, but it's not all that important. Knuckles can dig. Hedgehogs can't dig. I think that's about it.

...aaaand this is where your wheels finally fell off. Although yeah, Amy Rose is a hedgehog!

Tails is a boy. His real name is Miles Prower. Everybody calls him Tails because he's got two of 'em. He was bullied as a kid, but Sonic was the first person not to care (and even better, celebrated the fact that Tails could fly by spinning his tails) so they became best bros.

So, what's your favourite Sonic game?

• I haven't played many of them, but so far Sonic 2 on the Mega-Drive. It felt a lot like the first game but sharper, more vibrant, deeper sound design, more varied enemy designs and faster too, which is something you definitely need in a Sonic game. If I ever get around to watching the movies I'll pop some thoughts into this thread. So far it's just handful of early games and the soundtrack for (checks) Sonic Frontiers. Though as I said to you already I'm enjoying going through the different Sonic encyclopedias to learn more.

If this isn't seared into your brain then I don't know what to tell you, this is easily my favourite Sonic game and honesly Adventure 1 + 2 deserve some sort of remake.... or we could finially get a 3rd entry, I'm easy like that!

@GirlVersusGame Sonic 2 is a popular choice, largely for the reasons you mentioned. There's a lot to love and respect about the original, but I agree that its sequel is a huge improvement. It's also the first time I ever sat up and took notice of a game's soundtrack!

@nomither6 I genuinely mean this as a positive, but I continue to be fascinated by the fact that we agree so strongly about Unleashed (my favourite Sonic game of all time) and yet appear to disagree in equal measure about Frontiers (my second-favourite Sonic game of all time). I'd also join you in celebrating Riders, I reckon that game is sorely underrated... and yet I find Mania to be extremely overrated, and would personally rank it way lower. I guess it really does take all sorts!
