Welcome to a dedicated discussion topic for all things Star Wars. Next year will be the 50th Anniversary of the space opera mega-franchise, celebrating the 1977 release of its first instalment, Episode IV: A New Hope (which, back then, was simply entitled Star Wars... oh, how far we've come).
There are many new releases looming on multiple multimedia fronts, including new games Star Wars: Zero Company (one for you, @BearsEatBeets) and Star Wars: Galactic Racer.
Next year will also see the original movie return to theatres, joined by the new adventure Star Wars: Starfighter (not to be confused with the PS2 game of the same name) and the next season of the well-received animated series Maul: Shadow Lord. Along with dozens of comics, books, and more Tales and Visions anthologies, I'm sure it won't be long before we hear news of the third Star Wars: Jedi game, either.
In other words, there's gonna be a lot, so to avoid clogging up other discussions, consider this The Way to nerd out about lightsabers, Wookiees, and why a parsec should be a unit of distance!
Oh, yeah, and may the Force be with you!

@Ravix As promised, I thought I'd continue our recent conversation, seeing as I just made a Sonic topic and yet had left you hanging for a Star Wars equivalent. Sorry for the delay!

I really like Andor, especially later into s1 where the tension builds (I assume you watched both even if it wasn't for you, or did you skip some?) And I really liked some of s2, as well. I need to rewatch it to be honest, as once isn't enough.
Nah, I still need to watch the second season. It's interesting to see you lavish praise on Season 1 and then come across a little more lukewarm on Season 2, as I heard the opposite, that it really picks up and improves itself in its second outing. Perhaps I'm listening to the wrong people, or was it that you just dug the vibe of its first season more? Or did you like both equally, and I'm just reading you wrong?
Ravix wrote:
I can see how some may think it is not very Star Wars in those aspects (is that why it isn't for you? I feel like we may have discussed reasons at some point but my brain is not reliable) but I think what it does do is show the human/living cost of the Empire in a way that is kind of hard to do in movies. We know they are bad, they do bad things, but seeing those who are living under this empire and dealing with the ramifications is something I enjoyed as it allowed for more human performances.
Without wanting to get too serious, it's also very timely material. I have seen a lot of protest signs quoting the show and I think that's to be championed. And I think you're right, two hours would be more than enough time if a movie's singular focus was to make that specific point, but Star Wars is often trying to be lots of different things to a lot of different people, all at once, and so separating out its component parts and exploring them individually in shows, games, comics and books can be very rewarding.
Ravix wrote:
I also loved Mon Mothma's arc in it. It allows for more emotional insight to how these characters think, and i'm a very emotionally driven person.
I have seen nothing but praise for Mon's part in the show, so this doesn't surprise me. Genevieve O'Reilly is a superb talent. It's a shame they cut her scenes from Revenge of the Sith because she's always great to watch, so I'm glad they managed to retain her for plenty of new projects since!

I also think the games and Cal are interesting, and always want to see them do even more with that. Fingers still crossed for more than just a game. And as mentioned the Hidden Path is an aspect I want to see expand in tv, game or movie, and it has been going that way, which is nice.
Back when it got mentioned in the Obi-Wan series, and they name-dropped Quinlan Vos, it certainly felt like the plan was to build towards something which focused on it more, yeah. Whether or not that era is being left behind now, I'm not sure. There's a growing criticism in fan circles that we keep finding more and more Jedi who survived Order 66, and that it undercuts A: the brutality of Palpatine's plan and B: Yoda telling Luke that he's the last Jedi in Return of the Jedi. I disagree with that criticism. There were 2,000 Jedi serving at the end of the Clone Wars (not counting initiates). Even having a hundred of them survive would still make for a tragic statistic, and they're not all gonna be in a position to help the Rebellion. It's a big galaxy!
Ravix wrote:
They also aren't tied in to any particular direction for Cal, we know he doesn't feature in A New Hope, and there can be more than one reason for that being the case. I'll spoiler tag for the games, just in case people are skim reading as I will mention some of the end of Survivor Obviously it could be a simple retired and out. He could be truly underground and hidden away but helping from afar. He could be Deceased. He could be Betrayed or suffer great loss and lose control of his emotions in some way and all the things that can lead to could happen. Oh, if they dare touch Witchy Merrin or Kata we are in for a wild ride to whatever destination we end up at, too! But even the raising of a child brings it in line with it even more classic Star Wars stories. And if they want to milk it beyond the Cal trology there is a new character right there ready to take over in a different set of stories (that's how it usually works, isn't it 😅) so, as always... "there is another"
Literally what I was just saying in my previous paragraph. I should read ahead more!
Ravix wrote:
I feel like I started watching some of the animated shows a few years ago, but I honestly can't remember which, I think the ones with Anakin and Clones, so more in line with the prequel trilogy, I suppose.
[...]
Shadow-Lord again I don't even know much about it. Is it pre-prequels? Or post prequels more in line with the Solo story. This is my brain going to mush again. But I suppose Solo is in it's own way leading up to Episode IV as well, so it kind of counts anyway.
Don't worry, even I get lost sometimes! The Clone Wars takes place between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith and if you saw Anakin running around with a bunch of Clone Troopers, chances are that's the show you watched. It started very "Saturday morning cartoon" but, much like the prequels themselves, grew up with its audience and was cancelled by Disney for getting too dark (seriously, they had to censor some episodes before broadcast, it got proper grim).
Maul: Shadow Lord is set right after The Bad Batch, which itself is set right after Revenge of the Sith, so it's all "early days of the Empire" stuff showing how nobody quite knows how to react to the nascent regime, and how some folks think it might be a good thing (spoiler alert: it's not). They are shows that reside beneath the Dark Times umbrella, but are interesting because you get a little more insight into how all of Palpatine's chess pieces got moved around. It didn't happen overnight.
Ravix wrote:
I guess overall I enjoy the traditional Star Wars type Jedi focused stories just much as the in-universe other 99% of existence stories, but it depends on the overall qualities of each and mood. The tone of many are different enough to tickle different fancies. And I do think Andor helps set a mood for the rest of everything that goes on BBY.
Yeah, that's what I alluded to before, and I think it's a great strength of the franchise. There's something out there to suit pretty much every mood. Heck, I can't even decide between my two favourite Star Wars movies, because one is a fun adventure and the other is bleak and emotionally charged, and they scratch two very different itches! So it really does depend on which day you ask me!
Ravix wrote:
Which elements of those that you mentioned do not sit well with you are to blame for that feeling? Did you ever watch all of Andor or just know it isn't interesting for you?
I'll finish it someday. Again, it's about being in the right headspace for it, but to dig down into details even further, I think there are different, more effective ways of exploring each potential aspect of the Star Wars universe, and those ways aren't always gonna be able to chime with everybody. The first season of Andor just wasn't "my" Star Wars. That's not its fault, and it isn't mine, either. Star Wars wasn't merely a huge part of my childhood. It remains a huge part of my life, and is a positive source of support whenever I need to rely on escapism for personal balance. Looking through that lens, there can be such a thing as "too real".

Oof, I should probably do more to separate BBY shows and ABY shows in my mind, as I now have the urge to watch Obi Wan and Ahsoka. Both Jedi focused, but different eras. I won't even consiser which era I prefer as that will just mess with my mind 😄
Forgive me if you already said so before, but did your Ahsoka steelbook arrive safely and, if so, did you get around to giving it a re-watch?
"If I let not knowing anything stop me from doing something, I'd never do everything!"
@Werehog It's good it has it's own home again. I've seen a few more vids on Zero Company now and it really does look promising. I'll post any future relevant stuff hear.
@BearsEatBeets Among other factors, it was seeing you once again lament the lack of a dedicated topic which gave me a kick in the pants. I guess there's nothing to stop anybody from making a new topic for a specific game, so if the Zero Company chat gets real intense, have at it, but it's also good to have somewhere to fall back to, so that non-fans don't get disheartened or disengage with other discussions.
Also, I'm real glad I pre-ordered Zero Company now, as those previews were glowing! Thanks for sharing them! Still not sure if I'll be able to start it right away, but I'm way more hyped than I was before!

@Werehog firstly, about darn time 😛 I think there will be lots to discuss over the coming months, but no pressure to do it all at once.
That said, here comes the meat of it (or maybe the polystarch of it)...

I think i'm just being more reserved on s2 as i've only seen it once (release the steelbook now, Disney etc) so I kind of need to binge it again in a few days or something to really assess how I feel overall. I think there are parts of it you will like, too. Big up the Mon, again. I think I just need to reasses with a fresh mind, and now that I know the direction it takes I won't be expecting a different direction myself, and can thus judge it better without my own expectations getting in the way. It definitely has some really great highs. And those people you asked are maybe right, because it does a lot and the scale is probably even bigger.
S1 is maybe very slow to get into it, but once the tension builds it is worth the payoff, to me. Rix Road was a stunning bit of tv, and like I say, the Serkis arc is a very memorable part, too. I find it (Andor, as a whole) really helps show the effects the empire has on regular people. (Ah yes, I mentioned that later in my quoted comments, but still)
Okay, I now know what you mean regarding your own experience of it. And it is of course very understandable and I won't delve further into it if you do not wish.
What I will do is provide my own experience and say that I think when I first watched Andor it definitely started tweaking my personal panic nerves a little, it was done so well, and built that feeling of real oppression and tension so well that I may have had to pause it at certain moments because of the genuine unease it captured and started to transplant into me making me feel that genuine unease myself. Which, as you say, not great if you want a relaxing escape, rather than, in my case, feeling a genuine panic, distress and unease building. Maybe that is different to your own personal feelings you had, but know that it definitely affected me in a way I wasn't expecting, and it kind of brought some old memories of less good stuff back for me. Again it may be totally different to what you felt, but I just wanted to try and convey "I feel you, dawg" in a more personal way. It can be a very uneasy watch for any number of reasons, so yeah. I understand your reasons now, even if it is unrelated to what I just said.
I can't actually remember season 2 being quite like that, for me, though, so maybe there is hope for that being a better watch for you, too. That may just be me because I was expecting that from the show by then and it didn't hit me quite the same. Again, a rewatch required, so don't take it as gospel, it is still an intense show and there is definitely tension, but maybe it is a different type and less visceral making it easier to enjoy the other aspects. Either way, itnis up to you, and I wouldn't ever try to say you must watch this or that. Hopefully it gives you a baseline of my perspective, at least, so you know i'm not just merely treating it as a show, but as something that also affected me in some ways, too.
I know i've gushed somewhere on here about a really good portrayal of an "altered mindstate + depression" being in Andor s2, as well. They seem adept at capturing real personal, very specific emotions and transplanting them onto the viewer, if the viewer is receptive. They made that feel real, to me, too, and it all went Pete Tong for a moment. (That is a reference to it literally reminding me of that kind of genre cinema from things like It's All Gone Pete Tong, Trainspotting etc. Drink, drugs, depression, downward spirals, all set to thumping electronic music.) it is super effective and made me feel those things myself via personal memory triggers, but I kind of dig when a show or movie can do that, it is like you can feel a trance-like state just from watching and it touches the soul, you feel their pain, too. The showrunners really seem to get how to use different styles of cinema for different episodes, and speicifc moments etc. Another wider Star Wars feature. But in Andor they really use it to tap into some, let's call it, real deep shizz.
Ooh, Yes! Ahsoka came in (via premium paper bag, naturally) complaints were made and eventually it got sorted. I haven't watched yet, but I recently rewatched Mando s2, so after getting through s3 sometime in the next few weeks I will then get Ahsoka watched. All timed ready for the phsycial release of the Mando Movie arriving, hopefully 😄 Of course, I will grit my teeth and pretend the Boba Fett episodes were also released, too. And I assume after I finish Mando s3 they will probably announce the Boba Fett physical for December/Jan or something anyway. So then I will have to do it all over again out of spite 😅
After finishing Mando and Ahsoka I will probably move back to the Andor and Obi Wan era at some point, and hope for the Andor s2 physical to release so I can time that nicely, too (come on Disney, Sony etc. Start teasing us for the anniversary celebrations with what we all want) And hopefully we get the Cal Jedi 3 teaser sometime early next year, too. Which will all fit nicely and help me remember what era i'm invested in at that moment 😅
Like you say in your original post, plenty of stuff that is coming, and plenty more that could be coming soon🤞😄
Hmm, what were your two favourite entries, seeing as you can't always be certain of just picking one? I can't let that little tease go unanswered. And do you have anything coming up that you are due to rewatch, or are you currently in the middle of anything/multiple things?
I believe I also promised you a sneaky sneak peek at my steelbook array/wall display etc at some point, too. Now, this will technically be the current mini Star Wars Shrine part of my collection, de-steel-walled. It also shows clever planning by me, as the more they release the less it will fit into that specific space and I will have to rearrange stuff. Anyway, as this is the Star Wars mega thread, what better place for such a disgusting display of nerdy fandom.

(I will take another photo without the dust, and replace it at some point 😅 I hope you are not alergic to my poor effort, bad planning or, indeed, the dust itself)
Whew! Heatwave brain goes brrrrr. As I say, no pressure on replying to everything right away.

Also, what exactly is Zero Company? I think it is maybe a game from a genre I have no experience with, and thus my brain has ignored all mentions of it online. Is it like those games with card battles or 'pick a team' dynamics where the fun is just outdoing an opponent, or is it much deeper and featuring some kind of story alongside tactical battles that advance in some narrative way?

Seems like its XCom and Mass Effect made some sweet love and then someone slapped a Star Wars skin over the top.

Less people I asked, more just general consensus I absorbed while being careless about spoilers, but thanks, I'm grateful you reckon there are parts I'll like and certainly appreciate the endorsement, especially in context of our wider discussion. I also totally understand and respect your caution and desire to re-watch it, so as to shore up your own opinion and separate yourself from your expectations. I really hope your second pass is a blast, and that you come away even more enamoured with the show!

Thanks, pal... and please, delve away! You always approach topics from such a positive and respectful place, so the least I can do is answer what I can.
I won't quote your own experience with Andor in full, but I will thank you for sharing it, and for your honesty in doing so. I most definitely "feel you, dawg" an' all, s'all good, and I very much appreciate your attempt to apply your own experience to understanding my perspective, that's supremely awesome of you. I also genuinely admire the fact that, despite the emotions and old memories it triggered, you were still able to appreciate and enjoy the experience! While that's a skill I do have, it's not one I can rely on. There are plenty of other examples of shows, movies, books, games, etc. where subverting or indeed, even just exceeding expectations has been something to celebrate, so it's not like I'm against the concept or anything!
Perhaps we'll circle back to this when I watch Season 2, or when you re-watch it. Again, please feel free to ask or answer anything at any time! And no pressure to reply, either!

I've given up trying to manifest a physical release for The Book of Boba Fett. I'm real sorry, but I'm gonna be selfish and hope that your own sod's law has better luck!

D'oh! My apologies, I never intentionally tease! It's just tough to be conversational via text sometimes, so I occasionally forget what I have and haven't included before posting. My two favourite Star Wars movies are The Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith. I try not to get into rankings too often, it's silly when I just love Star Wars and would be happy enough watching (nearly) any of it, but those two movies, as well as Return of the Jedi, "Chapter 2: The Tribes of Tatooine" from The Book of Boba Fett, and "Part Five: Shadow Warrior" from Ahsoka mean the most to me. I guess that'd be my top five!
What about you? Or are you not really a rankings person? Again, no pressure!
I'm kinda staying away from Star Wars at the moment. Largely because it's been an uncomfortably warm summer and I can't properly engage with anything while it's so heckin' hot, but also because I know that, with new games and shows on the horizon, I'm bound to disappear down the rabbit hole again soon, so I might as well mix things up while I can. I have Zero Company and Galactic Racer on pre-order and, as a bare minimum, I'll re-watch Ahsoka before its second season drops. I also have some LEGO to build which, again, is an activity best enjoyed when it's cool enough to think straight!
Ravix wrote:

ImgBB is currently down, but I did see your shelf while lurking earlier and was very impressed (and couldn't see any dust, either)! Absolutely not a poor effort, nor bad planning. There's always gonna be another release somewhere down the line, and no shelf space is infinite! It's why I won't show you my displays yet as again, I'll be waiting 'til winter before I attempt a big ol' re-org.
Also, I gotta ask, are those Sideshow / Hot Toys models of a lothcat and Grogu?
"If I let not knowing anything stop me from doing something, I'd never do everything!"
Expand
@Werehog i'll start at the bottom (ooh, Matron) they are indeed Hot Toys. They were a good size, fit for purpose, and all came together in one package (3 Grogu's, a Loth Cat and a tiny one eyed frog (you will know the name of it, I'll just call it Grogu's dinner) so I couldn't resist them for display purposes. They are the same scale as the footlong (ooh again, Matron) figures they release. 1:6 I believe. I was seriously considering going all-in on Hot Toys at some point this year, but I resisted. But I think the Boba on a throne is a really awesome piece that I kind of definitely want to get (the updated armour is maybe one of my low-key favourite bits of design in modern star wars) and I'm still tempted by a full Mando piece, of course. And now they are even doing an Andor (based on the Rogue One movie look) here we see the dangers of it 😅 I've only just finished making more room for the increasing phsycial media collection with shelving and cabinets, and sorting the gaming room out, and now i'm in danger of cluttering things up with even more tat and stuff, and this could lead to being in an endless cycle of DIY, reorganisation and display (insanity). But the urge to geek out is strong in this one. Tldr: Yes, it is Hot Toys, cute aren't they 😄
So I feel like maybe you mentioned Hot Toys or some collectibles/figures in times past? So the floor is now open if you want to delve into that aspect of Star Wars for a bit. And this is now my long drawn out way of saying, do you partake, and do you have any of the Hot Toys or figures beyond lego? What are your levels of interest in the various collectibles etc? I'm all ears/eyes/interest.
I'll maybe get around to replying about the other stuff another time (i've read it all and am eager to do so) but as collectibles is a huge topic in and of itself within the Star Wars universe, I should just get this part posted, for now, without going on four more long tangents 😄 and that will be best for us both, I believe.
(Oh dear, I didn't stop...)
Interesting choices for favourites. And I mean that genuinely, not passive aggressively (written text can be awkward for tone) Was there specific reasoning, the vibes, the characters, maybe you grew up with the Anakin story, for example? I remember really enjoying the emotional downfall, and the fact it isn't really a happy ending. That kind of appeals to my own emotional brain more than everything just going swimmingly. And I think movies can mean different things at different times too. The Phantom Menace will have been a lot of people's first ever Star Wars movies, and I think the older fanbase can sometimes write off the fact those films are designed for the youth of the time, not just for their personal nostalgia, and what they think is cool might not be what someone 20 or 30 years later thinks is cool 😅
I couldn't even pin when I got into Star Wars properly, myself. As a kid I was enthralled by some movies I saw, of course I was. But then time passed, other things took over and in a way I just grew apart from that, but then I ended up revisiting the franchise, maybe only since streaming took off big as everything became available together? I remember being excited for the sequels, a new era, and I probably watched the new ones a fair few times, also revisting everything else with more of a child like wonder and open mind, once again. The Jedi Games really helped cement my fandom, too as it just fit in at the time I was developing my interest. I know my uncle and cousins were big into Star Wars when I was a wee nipper too, so it is all kind of nostalgic, even if it wasn't my own nostalgia, I was often around Star Wars stuff as a kid, if that makes sense.
Anyway, accidental tangent. I didn't really nail down my own personal favourites. I'd almost be tempted to say the Jedi games, but that is probably just because you experience games differently to movies and can immerse for longer periods of time overall. I'm going to have to do a full movie chronological re-watch aren't I? The Mandalorian definitely scratches an itch, Andor too. I mean, I even really quite like the Ubisoft game, it has its flaws, but it is very, very, very good at being incredibly immersive Star Wars.
I know I don't even mind the more political based parts of the prequel trilogy (this fits with Andor, too) I definitely like Anakin's arc, I know I have a soft spot for the sequel trilogy (sue me) and of course the Originals. I think the most excited I got for something new being announced was actually for Star Wars Eclipse (may we pray this sees light of day... it won't - I'm not sure that dev is what they once were and have basically imploded since Detroit: Become Human) so yeah, basically everything depending on what i'm in the mood for 🤷♂️
Apologies. I just let my brain type words rather than first think an answer through 😄 it is what it is. I can't really change that... enjoy 😛

@BearsEatBeets cheers i'll check them out today, some time 😄 I really had just taken no notice every time it ever got mentioned for whatever reason. But I'll make an effort to see what it is like.
In other news... I caved and got back on the Disney + horse. There is just too much Star Wars content to actually own, and I think I will get back on the clone wars shows at some point soon. And I couldn't bare starting my Mando Season 3 without watching Boba Fett first, which was ultimately what got me. It is, most definitely, a trap, as they say. I also expect this will be the true catalyst for them to announce the physical release, probably as I roll credits on it.
A bonus is they also have Futurama and Solar Opposites new seasons. Not Star Wars, but I hadn't realised they were out/existed.
