Micron reneges on warranty claim, offers less than market value for an RMA'ed Crucial X10 Pro 4TB SSD

Despite Micron’s promise to honor warranties for its consumer brand, Crucial, its own support apparently didn’t get the memo. A Reddit user recently purchased a Crucial X10 Pro 4TB, and the external SSD died at 1% of its lifespan, but they were only offered their original purchase price back, which is roughly half the cost of a new drive currently

After Micron shut down its Crucial consumer memory and storage brand, customers with lifetime warranties are increasingly being told that there’s no more stock to cover claims, and the company is offering refunds at retail launch prices instead of the current market price for SSDs and memory kits.

The Redditor contacted Crucial’s RMA team, and the response he received was unexpected. The team said no replacement stock was available and offered a refund at the original retail price.

For context, Micron shut down its consumer memory division, Crucial, at the tail end of 2025 and redirected its NAND and DRAM production focus toward higher-margin AI data center and enterprise customers. That means no factory or stock remains for still-active warranties on Crucial products.

A promise that seems to be selectively applied at best

Micron and Crucial explicitly announced that they would continue to offer warranty services to their existing customers, a promise that doesn’t quite line up with this incident. The Redditor posted on r/pcmasterrace and explained:

“My Crucial X10 Pro 4TB died at 1% of its rated lifespan. It didn’t wear out; it just broke. And I didn’t have to argue about whether it’s defective, because Crucial’s OWN software (Storage Executive) flags it.”

The Redditor AssignmentGlass5591 continued:

“So I RMA it, pay out of pocket to ship it to their warehouse, and they tell me: no replacement, consumer business is closed, refund of the original price only (€230, when the same drive costs ~€410 today).”

A Crucial supervisor emailed the Redditor, writing:

“Due to the closure of Crucial, the production of all components, including portable SSDs and M.2 NVMe SSDs, has been discontinued. The stock is therefore exhausted.”

This isn’t Micron’s first warranty complaint run-in with a customer. Another user posted several weeks earlier, stating that Micron was willing to offer only “17% of market value and keeping working hardware” for a 48GB DDR5 kit refunded at its original $241.86 price, while the kit currently hovers around $400–$500.

This pattern isn’t unique to Micron, as right-to-repair and consumer rights advocate Louis Rossman was offered the retail amount of $330 for his dead Samsung 990 Pro SSD, which he could only replace for around $950. This is surprising, considering Samsung promises to honor refunds at the “current market value” when replacements aren’t available.
