GPD recently revealed pricing details for its upcoming AMD Ryzen Strix Halo-powered gaming handheld, the Win Max 3. As one might expect, the high-end gamer costs quite a fortune, thanks to datacenter demand driving component prices to new highs.

The base variant of the gaming handheld was revealed to be priced at $1,750, featuring a Ryzen AI Max+ 388 APU paired with 32 GB of RAM and a terabyte of solid-state storage. Bumping up the RAM and storage to 64 GB and 2 TB respectively would propel the price to a cool $2,246, while the highest-end variant with the full-fat Max+ 395 APU, 128 GB of RAM, and 2 TB storage commands an eye-watering $3,499 price tag.

GPD has since released a statement, attempting to justify the prices for the Win Max 3. The brand has stated that the prices for the gaming handheld "represent the greatest sincerity" they can offer, given the ongoing component pricing crisis.

GPD also highlighted that they lack headroom for aggressive negotiations unlike certain dominating brands, especially considering just how niche the UMPC and gaming handheld market still is.

To be fair, there is a lot of truth to their statement. There is no denying that DRAM and storage prices have overwhelmed OEMs, resulting in price hikes across nearly every product segment. In comparison, the Ayaneo Next 2 and OneXPlayer X2 Mini Pro, both Strix Halo-powered handhelds, start at substantially higher prices.

More precisely, the OneXPlayer X2 Mini Pro with the Ryzen AI Max+ 388, 48 GB RAM, and a terabyte of storage is priced at a mind-boggling $2,499. The Ayaneo Next 2, on the other hand, starts at $1,799, but features a comparatively inferior Ryzen AI Max+ 385 APU and 32 GB of RAM.

Moreover, the GPD Win Max 3 is not just a gaming handheld, but a full-fledged UMPC complete with a 9.06-inch display, a serviceable keyboard, and a removable battery.

Considering that there is yet to be any sign of datacenter spending slowing down, it is certainly quite likely that gamers and consumers will have to wait a long, long time before prices drop back down to somewhat saner levels.
