How Ancient Lava Flows Mimic Honeycomb Physics to Build Nature’s Strangest Columns

Nature rarely does straight lines. If you look at a forest, a rock, or a coastline, you see all sorts of shapes and chaos. But visit the coast of Northern Ireland or the high deserts of Oregon, and you’ll find something that looks almost like a civil engineering project.

I’m talking, of course, about columnar basalt.

Huge, dark pillars of stone rise from the dirt. They are perfectly hexagonal. They stand shoulder-to-shoulder like a terracotta army of frozen lava. They look like someone perfectly sculpted them, but they’re perfectly natural. In fact, they’re the Earth’s way of solving a high-stakes physics problem under extreme pressure.

A Volcanic Eruption

Basalt starts as runny, searing lava—usually between 1,100°C and 1,250°C. The hotter lava is, the better it flows. Basaltic lava is on the hot side of the spectrum. As the lava flows down, if the geography is just right, it can start pooling in a valley. It sits as a thick lake of molten fire, losing heat from the top and bottom.

As it cools, it solidifies; it also shrinks. This is where the magic happens.

When lava cools, it pulls away from itself in every direction. This creates immense internal tension. The rock must crack to relieve that stress, and physics demands it do so efficiently.

Initially, the cracks are random. But as the cooling moves deeper into the flow, the cracks organize. Nature is a stickler for efficiency. To release the most energy with the least effort, the lava settles on a pattern of 120-degree angles.

Why 120 degrees? Because that’s the angle of a hexagon. If you fill a floor with circles, you get gaps. If you use squares, the corners are weak. But hexagons fit together perfectly with zero wasted space. That’s also why bees make hexagonal honeycombs; it’s the most energy-efficient.

As the “cooling front” moves into the heart of the lava, these cracks follow it, unzipping the rock into long, vertical pillars.

The columns always grow perpendicular to the “cooling surface.” If the lava is a flat lake, heat escapes out the top, so the columns grow straight down. But nature is rarely flat. If lava flows into a curved valley, the columns twist and curve to follow the temperature. At Svartifoss in Iceland, the columns hang like organ pipes draped over a cliff.

These formations are also ancient thermometers. By measuring the width of the columns, geologists can calculate exactly how fast the lava cooled. Wider columns mean a stable process lasting a longer time. Thinner columns suggest rapid, chaotic cooling.

Columnar basalt shows up in various places; all it takes is the right type of eruption and the right cooling conditions. In the United States, we have Devils Tower in Wyoming. It’s an 800-foot monolith that looks like a bundle of petrified straws. For the Lakota and other Plains tribes, this was a sacred site, explained as the work of a giant bear clawing at a mountain. When you see the vertical grooves, the “bear scratch” theory feels pretty believable.

But bears build these causeways; neither did giants, as the Irish believed. The laws of thermodynamics did. And honestly? That’s a much better story.
