Site, Distribution, Legibility

Дата публикации: 21-07-2026 00:00:00

Various monikers over the years have been ascribed to artworks that consider the circumstance of their making: situationally-derived, site-responsive, in-situ–each differentiated by the nuances of practice but united by a shared will to exist in relation to their environment. These terms are all derived from the Latin root, situs, meaning “situation, position, or site,” inherently signalling a commonality in intent. I propose a retooled term, responsive, to both encompass the minutiae of these categories and to redress their scope. This term is used both to refer back to the rich history of conceptual art and to address contemporary practices that admit and challenge present conditions, such as those that involve the implications of new media. A responsive practice tends to occur across three, interrelated sub-dimensions: site, legibility, and distribution. This research relates how visual artists can use this framework to address the systems or conditions under which they operate.
