Temple University announces scholarships for Philly police, firefighter families

Temple University has announced a new scholarship that benefits students whose parent or guardian serves in Philadelphia’s public safety workforce.
Beginning in the 2026–27 academic year, the scholarship program will support up to 30 students who will receive up to $10,000 annually in scholarship support. This applies to students with demonstrated financial need and whose parent or guardian works for the Philadelphia Police Department, SEPTA Transit Police or Philadelphia Fire Department.
The scholarship is renewable for qualifying students, according to Temple University officials.
It was made possible by the Neubauer Family Foundation, which contributed $1.2 million. Selected students will be known as “Neubauer Scholars”.
The daughter of Bryan Kriner, a 19-year veteran of the Philadelphia Fire Department, is one of the Fall 2026 recipients. Kriner said the $10,000 scholarship is life-changing.
“She can invest that in something else. It’s amazing. It’s very generous of the Neubauers. We’re thrilled,” he said on Friday, May 15.
Along with the financial assistance, scholars are also offered mentorship and student success resources designed to support retention and graduation.
