Virginia Ann Patrick Wagnon

Virginia Ann Patrick Wagnon passed away on August 16, 2026, at the age of 93.

Born on March 20, 1933, in Quitman, Ga., she was the beloved daughter of the late Walter Wesley and Edith Patrick.

An alumna of Shorter College, Virginia treasured her years there, where she was an active participant and leader in a variety of campus organizations and earned her B.A. and teaching certification.

Virginia was married to the literal “boy next door,” James B. Wagnon, Sr. for 54 years until his passing in 2012. Married in Quitman, Ga., they made their home and raised their children in Chattanooga.

Through the years, Virginia served others in numerous volunteer organizations. Her contributions to Contact of Chattanooga and Memorial Hospital's Stephen Ministry touched many lives. An active member of First Baptist Church of Chattanooga, Virginia taught single adult Sunday School, participated in the prayer ministry, and sang in the Sanctuary Choir, sharing her faith and joy with every note.

Virginia is survived by her son, James B. Wagnon, Jr. (Lisa) and daughter, Meredith McEwen (Jeff), as well as six grandchildren, Sean McEwen (Lance), Rachel Fisher (Jonathan), Austin McEwen, Ashley Brownfield (Daniel), Jordan Wagnon, and Pat Wagnon (Carli Jo), and five great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at American House of Gunbarrel Road and Gentiva Hospice for their compassion and care during Virginia’s final days. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to Gentiva Hospice or First Baptist Church of Chattanooga.

A private burial will be held at Chattanooga National Cemetery. A memorial service will be held in McEwen Chapel at First Baptist Church on Friday, Aug. 21, at 4 p.m. with Pastor Thomas Quisenberry officiating. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday at the church.
