Charles Oliveira has finally broken his silence on the defeat by Islam Makhachev at UFC 280. 

The Brazilian has avoided interviews and social media but spoke for the first time about his devastating loss in the lightweight title fight in October. 

Makhachev dominated throughout before winning by second-round submission to claim the belt. 

Despite many believing it would be a closer contest and the one-sided nature of the fight, Oliveira insists he would do nothing differently next time. 

He told Brazilian podcast Super Lutas: 'Islam was better. I have no excuses but I wouldn't do anything different from what I did.

'I saw some people talking s—t, saying I was walking with lions in the week of the fight. They know nothing. I know how much I trained for this fight.'

Oliveira is yet to have another fight planned but Makhachev will be facing Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284 next year. 

The Australian is moving up a weight class and has his work cut out against the incredible grappling ability of his opponent. 

Oliveira believes the fight hinges on the ability of Volkanovski to stop takedowns and slightly favours Makhachev. 

He added: 'If Islam is able to close the distance and take him down, there is nothing much left to do. 

'But Volkanovski has great takedown defense and strong hands. If he is able to move and control the distance, he may surprise Islam. 

'It will be a question of who will implement his game plan better.'

Makhachev's mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, recently outlined the plan he has for the champion. 

He told Red Corner MMA: 'I think he needs at least five. Maybe six. That would be ideal. Six defences, that’s six fights and three years. Then it’s possible that the sport leaves him because nobody can stay on top forever. 

'The way the Almighty created a man, he first becomes strong then weak. He’s young then he’s old. Knowing that, the goal is five-six defences.'
