Background

The European Space Agency (ESA), the Centre National d’Études Spatiales (CNES), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the WCRP Global Energy and Water Exchanges project (GEWEX) are organising the next edition of the Space for Water Cycle and Hydrology Workshop, HYDROSPACE 2027, to be held from Monday 1st of March to Friday 5th of March 2027 at the Centre de CongrΓ¨s Pierre Baudis in Toulouse, France.

HYDROSPACE 2027 aims to review the latest progress in the use of Earth Observation (EO) for advancing hydrology, better understanding the water cycle and its interactions with human activities and ecosystems, including water quality in continental waters, and improving resilience to hydro-hazards such as floods, droughts and other extreme events. The workshop will provide an opportunity to explore the potential of current and upcoming EO missions, advanced modelling and AI capabilities, innovative data-integration techniques, and other emerging technologies.

Objectives

The overarching goal is to consolidate the state of the art in EO-based hydrological research and applications, and to contribute to shaping a forward-looking scientific agenda for ESA, CNES, NASA, GEWEX and the broader community. This agenda will help guide future scientific priorities, identify the most pressing questions and technical challenges ahead, and support the development of EO capabilities needed to address them.

Participation

HYDROSPACE 2027 welcomes EO scientists, hydrologists, water resource researchers, modellers, Earth system and climate scientists, students, operational agencies, industry, policy makers, and representatives of local and international stakeholder communities. Participants are invited to present their research, share their expertise, discuss new ideas, and contribute to defining the next steps for advancing EO-based water cycle research and its applications.
