Nearly six in 10 mid-sized Korean companies expect their export performance in the second half of this year to improve from a year earlier. The analysis suggests that recovering economies in major export destinations and easing political uncertainty will have a positive effect.
On Aug. 13, the Federation of Middle Market Enterprises of Korea announced the results of its “2026 Second-Half Export Outlook and Difficulties Survey of Middle Market Enterprises,” conducted on 250 export-oriented middle market companies. According to the survey, 56% of respondents said exports in the second half of this year would increase compared with the same period last year. By industry, rubber and plastics showed the highest level of optimism at 75%, followed by food products at 71.4%, information and communications at 66.7%, and electrical and electronics at 61.8%.
A clear shift is emerging in the landscape of export markets. Preference for entering the U.S. market, traditionally a key export destination, fell sharply from 17.5% to 4.0%, while China at 2.8% and Europe at 4.8% also recorded low preference levels. By contrast, Southeast Asia, including Vietnam at 7.2%, attracted a combined preference rate of 16.0%, while emerging markets such as India at 6.8% and Latin America at 5.2% are gaining attention as new strategic hubs.
The willingness to invest overseas is also becoming more concrete. Some 13.6% of middle market companies are already making overseas investments to expand their businesses, while 25.6% said they plan to invest within three years. However, companies reported difficulties in securing funding at 30.8%, local licensing and permit regulations at 20%, and identifying partners at 12%.
Expanded exchange-rate volatility at 47.3% was cited as the top external variable threatening the export environment. Rising raw material and labor costs at 36.4% and increased logistics costs at 30.9% were also found to be adding to management burdens. Among non-tariff barriers in particular, obtaining overseas certification at 51.2% and certificates of origin at 37.2% were identified as major obstacles standing in the way of faster export growth.
Companies also agreed that active government support is needed to revitalize exports. Their main policy suggestions were tariff cuts on imports of raw materials and parts and measures to stabilize supply and demand at 49.6%, support for logistics costs and export infrastructure at 48%, and assistance with overseas sales channels and market entry at 46.8%.
Kim Hyun-cheol, standing vice chairman of the Federation of Middle Market Enterprises of Korea, said, “In order to make the era of $1 trillion in annual exports a reality, the expansion of exports by middle-market enterprises is essential,” and added, “We must boldly expand effective policy support that reflects the demands of the field, such as finance, tariffs, and logistics.” This survey was conducted for about two weeks from June 22 to July 3.
