In the first half of this year, Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor export amounts to the United States and China both increased significantly, driven by a semiconductor boom resulting from the artificial intelligence (AI) frenzy.
According to the semiannual report disclosed by Samsung Electronics on Aug. 14, among Samsung Electronics’ sales status by major regions as of the end of June this year, the export amount to the United States was tallied at 70.6466 trillion won (about $50 billion). This figure more than doubled compared to the same period last year, which was 33.4759 trillion won.
Although regional sales for the DX (Device eXperience and finished products) division and the DS (Device Solutions and semiconductors) unit are not separated in the semiannual report, this increase is interpreted as the effect of the DS unit expanding production, sales, and operations centered around big tech companies.
The expansion of investments in AI servers and data centers increased the demand for high-performance memory such as HBM, and the continued price upward trend due to a supply and demand imbalance in memory semiconductors like DRAM and NAND flash played a major role.
Samsung Electronics is currently supplying HBM3E (5th generation) and HBM4 (6th generation) to major big tech companies, including Nvidia.
In fact, the DS division accounted for 68.5% (209.2 trillion won) of Samsung Electronics’ total sales of 305.4 trillion won in the first half of this year, and was responsible for 97.4% (142.9 trillion won) of the operating profit.
The upward trend was also prominent in China. During this period, the export amount to China was 88.6004 trillion won, surpassing the export amount to the United States. Compared to the first half of last year (28.7918 trillion won), it increased by 207.7%.
It is understood that the semiconductors Samsung Electronics sells and exports in China include server products as well as mobile products such as LPDDR, NAND, image sensors, and display driver ICs (DDI).
