Professor Stephen Pulman of the Oxford University Computing Laboratory gave this talk at the December 2008 Oxford Innovation Society meeting.
Computer science isn’t a science in the same sense that, say, biology, chemistry or physics are. Pure computer science is the theoretical study of techniques for the construction of hardware and software which operates correctly and efficiently.
However, computers are a pervasive aspect of our everyday social and professional lives, and these days much of the activity in computer science departments consists of the application of computing technology to problems in the other sciences. In this article, I’ll describe some ‘pure’ computer science research in Comlab, as well as some more application oriented work.
