A paper entitled ‘S-Match: an Algorithm and an Implementation of Semantic Matching’ co-authored by the Department’s Mikalai Yatskevich has been awarded the first ever ESWC: 7-Year Award

The conference series established the 7-Year Award to identify papers that were published at ESWC (under its various names) and have had a significant and lasting impact on the semantic web community.

Mikalai Yatskevich, a research assistant in the Department of Computer Science,  co-authored the articles with former colleagues Fausto Giunchiglia and Pavel Shvaiko from the Department of Information Communication Technology, at the University of Trento, Italy.

Semantic matching is a novel approach where semantic correspondences are discovered by computing and returning as a result, the semantic information implicitly or explicitly codified in the labels of nodes and arcs.  The paper presents an algorithm implementing semantic matching, and discusses its implementation within the S-Match system. The paper was the basis for Mikalai’s PhD thesis.
