The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship was first set up in 2004 in memorandum of Dr Anita Borg, who dedicated her professional career to increasing participation of women and under-represented minorities in the field of technology. The Scholarship is given annually by Google to encourage women to excel in computing and technology at university, and is open to undergraduate students as well as those studying for a doctorate. Google makes its decision based on the strength of each candidate’s academic background and demonstrated leadership, as well as their passion for increasing the involvement of women in computer science.

Ines Marusic - one of six in the UK, and one of forty winners worldwide - was awarded the €7,000 scholarship, which is used to encourage women to become active role models and leaders within their field. Recipients of the award are also invited to attend a scholars retreat at Google which includes workshops, specialist speakers and social activities over a couple of days.

Ines’s DPhil project currently focuses on Automated Verification, Algorithms and Information Systems.
