Ravishankar Borgaonkar is part of a team presenting research on 'New adventures in spying 3G and 4G users: Locate, Track & Monitor' at the Black Hat conference, which takes place in Las Vegas this week.

Ravi will present details of collaborative research together with Lucca Hirschi (ETH Zurich), Shinjo Park, Altaf Shaik and Jean-Pierre Seifert (TU Berlin).

The talk will focus on these issues:

  • The 3G and 4G devices deployed worldwide are vulnerable to IMSI catcher aka Stingray devices. The next generation 5G network may address user's privacy issues related to these IMSI catcher attack techniques;
  • New attack vectors that enable tracking and activity monitoring of mobile users, uncovering a new flaw in the widely deployed cryptographic protocol in 3G and 4G cellular networks;
  • Different methods to exploit this flaw using low-cost setup;
  • Presentation of several attacks to demonstrate their impact on end-users carrying 3G and 4G devices.
