Bio: Luis E. DePavia, MSEE, is the Innovation Manager at NuScale Power, reporting directly to Dr. José Reyes, Chief Technology Officer and co-founder. He leads the Integrated Energy Systems R&D group, developing technologies for the industrial use of NuScale’s nuclear energy and process steam applications. Luis has more than 28 years of experience commercializing large-scale projects in the oil and gas, and energy industries. He is a co-inventor on more than 40 patents and author of technical publications in next-generation technologies. He is a member of the American Nuclear Society and Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Q. How long have you been involved with The Open Group?

Q. What do you do, and how long have you been doing it?

I develop technologies to produce high-temperature steam with NuScale Power Modular™ (NPM) reactors for industrial applications. I have led the development of Integrated Energy Systems since 2022. 

Q. Why did your organization become a Member of The Open Group Industrial Advanced Nuclear™ Consortium and what does/will your involvement look like?

NuScale became a Member to understand the requirements of industrial energy users, communicate our capabilities, and help ensure that our solutions meet customer needs.

Q. How has/will membership in The Open Group benefit you, your organization, and the industry at large?

NuScale will benefit by gaining a deeper understanding of industrial energy users’ needs and identifying opportunities to provide solutions. The broader industry will benefit from strengthening the connection between nuclear and industrial sectors and advancing the use of safe, reliable, clean process heat and power. 

Q. Why is it important for other organizations to join The Open Group?

Our participation will help NuScale maximize the applicability of the standards to a wide cross-section of the industry. 

Q. What are your hobbies?

Paleo geochronology of geological formations from the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary. Multidisciplinary science laboratory experiments, new technology development, and education.

The Infinity Machine by Sebastian Mallaby, on artificial general intelligence.
Collisions by Alec Nevala-Lee, on the life of Luis Walter Alvarez, Nobel Prize physicist.

Q. Any last thoughts?
There is much to be gained from the collaboration between nuclear power producers and industrial energy consumers, and the opportunity for synergy is significant. Having spent part of my career in the oil and gas industry and now working in the nuclear industry has helped me understand and appreciate both perspectives.
