Waymo has been given final approval by both the California Public Utilities Commission and the Department of Motor Vehicles to expand its service to the rest of the Bay Area and other parts of California.

The California Public Utilities Commission approved Waymo’s expansion application Friday, following the California Department of Motor Vehicle’s approval last year for the same areas, as KRON4 reports.

The approvals also cover future Waymo service in Sacramento and all of Southern California from Los Angeles to the Mexican border, although the company said it will not launch in all of the newly approved areas immediately. Waymo said expansion will be gradual, with its immediate focus on preparing for rider-only service in San Diego later this summer and continuing to validate its technology in Sacramento.

KPIX reported last year that prior to the expansion approval, Waymo’s Northern California service was limited largely to the San Francisco Peninsula and San Jose prior to the approval of the expansion, while its Southern California operations were concentrated mainly within Los Angeles.

Waymo recently resumed freeway service following a six-week voluntary suspension in response to videos that emerged showing its vehicles appearing to go rogue in freeway construction zones. The company acknowledged there was a technical issue, though it stopped short of explaining exactly what had gone wrong, saying it had paused freeway operations to incorporate “recent technical learnings” into its software.

Service is also available in several other US markets, including Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta, and has been pursuing further expansion across the country.

Per KRON4, Waymo pointed to data from more than 220 million fully autonomous miles, saying its vehicles have been involved in an estimated 94% fewer serious-injury collisions than human drivers.
