Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s state-of-the-art surgical hub, Hampshire Orthopaedic Centre, is celebrating a major milestone after treating its 1,000th patient.

The Hampshire Orthopaedic Centre, based at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester, has now treated 1,000 patients from across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight since opening in September 2025. In that time, the specialist facility has helped increase access to planned orthopaedic surgery, reduce last-minute cancellations, and enable patients to receive treatment sooner. It has achieved a 44% day-case rate to date, meaning almost half of patients are able to return home on the same day as their procedure.

Designed to increase capacity for elective care, the purpose-built centre provides treatment for adults requiring procedures such as hip and knee replacements. By operating separately from emergency services, it is protected from many of the pressures affecting acute hospital sites, helping to reduce cancellations, improve patient flow and enhance patient experience.

The milestone procedure was carried out by the centre’s dedicated orthopaedic team on patient, Iris Osborne, aged 83 from North Baddesley. Iris underwent successful surgery and is already making good progress with her recovery, supported by the hub’s specialist team.

Speaking about her experience at Hampshire Orthopaedic Centre, Iris said: “I had a fall and from then on, the pain got so bad, I could hardly walk – I even had to get a wheelchair for my operation. The orthopaedic centre is so clean and bright, and the staff can’t do enough for you. When you’ve had a lot of pain, and then suddenly there isn’t any, you think thank goodness for that – it’s amazing.”

Most importantly, it represents 1,000 people whose lives have been transformed through treatment, helping them to regain their mobility, independence and quality of life. Seeing patients like Iris return to the activities they enjoy is exactly why this centre was created.”

The achievement comes shortly after the Trust received national accreditation through NHS England’s Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) surgical hub accreditation programme, recognising its high standards of patient care, clinical quality and operational performance.
