Kelly's Motorsports Park has the county's recommendation for approval to resume go-kart track operations at 3225 Harloff Rd.

Kelly's owner Mike Lauterborn attended the county Planning Board meeting Thursday night, when the board recommended a special use permit.

"Do you have all the paperwork? Does everything meet your (requirements)?" Lauterborn asked board members. County Director of Planning Felipe Oltramari said yes.

Lauterborn asked whether the next step would be a public hearing at the town of Batavia level.

"Check with the town, but they have to have a public hearing and then they have their meeting where they will approve it or disapprove it, or ask for more information from you," he told the Kelly's owner.

The special use permit request is now a town matter and won't have to come back to the county unless Lauterborn changes something, Oltramari said.

On June 4, Kelly's Motorsports posted on its Facebook page, "We regret to inform you that our permitting issues have come to light, and we must cancel all track activities until further notice. Sorry for any inconvenience. We will keep you posted as things progress to open."

Last month, Kelly's posted that progress was being made, but it would take some time.

"We have a list from the town of things they still need, and already have," Kelly's posted at the time.

The park was closed in 2009 due to bankruptcy, and the track had sat dormant for a decade, Kelly's said on its website. After Lauterborn revitalized over the three years, it reopened in the spring of 2025. A few races took place in May this year before the cancellations.

Oltramari said today that Lauterborn's likely to have the same activity the park hosted previously.

"He (Lauterborn) wanted to understand where the process went next," Oltramari said.

Lauterborn today said time is of the essence for the three-quarter-mile asphalt course.

"We'd like to get a few more races in this year. A lot of these guys will (show up) until the snow flies. These guys will practice or race," he said. "We'd like to get two or three more races in by the end of the season, depending on the weather."

Usually, the last race is in October, Lauterborn said.

"After that, it would be open for practicing every weekend after the race season is over with. We don't rent go-karts. You have to bring your own. This is a professional type (track)."
