Laney Mickey is the 2026 Elba Onion Queen, crowned Thursday night in a coronation ceremony at Village Park that continued a hometown tradition dating back to 1947.Grace Norton was named first runner-up. Brianna Totten, daughter of Jason and Jamie Totten, and Lucia Longoria, daughter of Flor Castillo and Rodrigo Longoria, also competed for the title.The pageant traces its roots to Elba's identity as the "Onion Capital of the World." Leanna Gateson was crowned the first-ever Onion Queen in 1947 during the local fire department's annual community field days, an event that eventually evolved into the Onion Festival.Today, the title is open to Elba high school seniors and juniors and remains tied to community events, scholarships and local pride in the region's rich black muck soils.Mickey, daughter of Sarah Brauen and Joseph Mickey, grew up in Elba and is active in football, basketball, cheerleading, the Student Athletic Association and the National Honor Society. She attends BOCES for Health Dimensions, where she hopes to earn her CNA, and plans to continue her education to become a registered nurse. Outside of school, she enjoys baking, hunting, drawing and spending time with friends.Norton, daughter of Christopher and Sarah Norton, will enter her senior year at Elba Central School this fall. She plays varsity volleyball, competes in indoor and outdoor track and field, and has served as both president and vice president of the Class of 2027. She is also involved in the Student Athletic Association, Multicultural Club, Drama Club and Future Teachers. Norton hopes to attend a four-year college to study childhood education, a passion strengthened by her time volunteering in an Elba first-grade classroom.Norton said she remembers going to the park every summer to watch the Onion Queen crowning and was thrilled to continue the tradition.For Mickey, the win fulfilled a dream she has had since she was a little girl watching older contestants being crowned in the park.
