Semiconductor equipment maker Gigatech has signed a contract worth 2.3 billion won to supply nanoimprint lithography (NIL) equipment, the company said August 14.

The customer is a global electronics company that plans to use the NIL equipment to manufacture automotive electronic components. The customer was not identified. The contract, worth about 2.3 billion won, covers an initial batch of equipment.

The contract runs through November. Gigatech plans to manufacture and supply the equipment and complete installation by the contract expiration date. The setup process includes equipment installation and commissioning.

NIL equipment directly transfers circuit patterns by stamping a mold containing a specific semiconductor circuit pattern, similar to using a stamp. It simplifies the process and reduces costs compared with deep ultraviolet (DUV) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment. Lithography equipment generally uses a light source and photomask to draw fine circuit patterns.

Gigatech's NIL equipment can produce circuit patterns at the nanometer scale. The equipment is used to manufacture next-generation displays, optical semiconductors such as silicon photonics, and automotive electronic components. Gigatech plans to use the order as a foothold to expand NIL equipment supplies in the automotive electronics sector. It is also targeting the extended reality (XR), metalens and next-generation display markets.

Gigatech is the only company in South Korea with a comprehensive nanopatterning solution. It commercialized nanoimprint equipment for light-emitting diode (LED) applications in 2018 and has continued to advance the technology. The company commercialized fully automated imprinting equipment in 2021 and 12-inch-class large-area fully automated NIL equipment in December 2022. In 2024, it also secured proprietary technology for resin, a key material used in nanoimprinting.

The company currently provides an integrated equipment, materials and process solution combining NIL equipment, key materials such as resin and process technology. Through customer-specific process optimization, it provides stable pattern precision and uniformity in mass-production environments.

A Gigatech official said, "Today's contract demonstrates that Gigatech's NIL technology can be applied to automotive electronics. We will expand our global customer base in advanced optics and semiconductor markets through our comprehensive nanopatterning solutions."

Gigatech reported first-quarter consolidated revenue of 7.813 billion won and an operating loss of 4.716 billion won.
